Crashes during selection of Thumbnails

Post by russcrabb »

I have encountered crashes in VS 8 with service pack 8.01 while selecting thumbnails for my submenus. After I divide up my project into subchapters, I go back in to choose the actual frame to be displayed in the submenu. It goes ok for a while, but then the program begins to slow down so that I have to wait to shuttle through the footage to find a good thumbnail frame. If I keep going and selecting more thumbnail frames, the program will eventually lock up, ask me to send Microsoft an error report, then dump me out of the program all together.

Occassionally, I will encounter a similar problem if I jog around a lot while trying to find logical breaks in the footage to cut into separate scenes. It seems that the more I jog or shuttle around, the greater the chance that the program will crash. On one occassion, a small window popped up stating "Low on memory". I have 1 gig!

I am running a 2.8meg machine with 1 gig of memory, two hard drives (one specifically for capturing video and for recording ISO files), and I never operate other programs while running VS 8. My files were captured as MPEG 2, VBR 8000, MPEG audio.

Any ideas??? Thanks.

Hi.

If I understand you correctly, you're searching out the stills for the menu while setting up the menu.

Let me suggest you do that ahead of time: Scroll to the frames you want, one by one, and "Save as still image." They will be saved in your working folder. The when you're setting up your menus, the pictures are all ready for you.

That should take some of the labor off the back of your program, and maybe solve your problem.

Program Crash

I'm having the same problem of VS8 getting slower the longer I edit a project and eventually crashing. For example, the first time I save (after an edit) the process takes less than a second. By the 5th save I'm up to about 10 seconds. I'm running a 3 ghz machine with 1 gig of memory and tons of hard drive space. This is getting very frustrating.

Cragie,
Your symptoms are exactly like VS behaved with its memory leak problem - fixed with the 8.01 update.

Program Crash Memory Leak

Thanks for the reply, John.

Yes, I've heard about the memory leak problem and I believe that's exactly what's happening to me. However, I am using version 8.01.1000 which is, I believe, the latest update.
