Sounds disappear when import movie to timeline

Post by Naz »

Hi All

I've done a search of the forum but haven't found an answer. Apologies If I missed anything if this is a known issue or If it is a stupid question. I am completely new to movie editing of any sort and Corel VS x6 Ultimate is my first dipping of my toes so to speak... so please forgive my ignorance.

When I import a movie into the timeline, the sound from that movie plays for approximately the first 2-4 minutes, and then cuts out. When looking at the sound mixer in the timeline, I can see where the wave simply cuts out at a point between 2 - 4 minutes (the actual time varies for each movie but it is within that 2-4 minutes bracket for all).

I have imported several movies and it is the same for each of them. The only time it doesn't happen is if the imported film itself is only of short duration (3-4 minutes). The other movies all are of approximately 10 minutes duration.

Is there a limit to how long a movie must be when importing to VS? If so, it seems awfully short?

The movies are game recordings made in game using Nvidia Shadowplay. All of them play perfectly fine in an actual movie player with the full recorded sound throughout.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the VS software to no avail. I'd really lik to edit the raw footage from the games to make some nice edited movies (figured I would use these game movies to learn the VS software).

Any help much appreciated guys. Thanks in advance.
:)

Hi Naz
And welcome to the forums

No questions stupid, as to my reply that is debatable.

There is no limit to the duration of the video files, however longer files do take the program longer to read, but how long is a bit of string.
10 minutes should not be a problem, your final video could be one hour.

It may be a codec issue, I know that Video Studio has problems using Fraps video from screen captures.
We would advise converting the video to a more editable format.

We need to know more details regarding your video files properties………..
With the video on the timeline right click and select properties, what are they?

Video Studio Playback, we can play in Clip mode or Project Playback mode, the words being highlighted next to the play button.
Are you having the same problems for each mode?

Hi Lata

Thanks so much for your reply, I really appreciate it.

I have been recording in game raw footage using Nvidia Shadowplay, and the issue occurs for all of the various recordings I have made. it does not happen for other movies (for example, movies made with an actual camera of the real world). On that basis I think it may well be an issue with Shadowplay and VisualStudo not liking each other.

I have not tried any other in game recording software such as Frap/MSI Afterburner or the like as yet, but I will do so over the weekend to test things out.

The sound cutting out does happen irrespective of the playback mode (Project vs. Clip). Hopefully the screenshot below of the timeline showing the sound wave gives a better indication of what I am talking about. You can see the sound wave cuts out around the 2-3 minute mark.

The properties of the example clip is;

Given my newbness to all of this, you can imagine nothing in there makes any sense to me!

I will try one or two other screen capture ideas next and let you know if I have any success. I suspect it is Shadowplay though.

Again, thanks a bunch for your help!

Hi again!

I just did a very quick in game recording using the screen capture software included in Gamebooster (by Razer). I recorded just over 6 minutes of in game footage. It worked fine inside VideoStudio with all sounds carrying through the entire movie.

So it seems there is an issue with Shadowplay. I think I will send a report to both Nvidia and Corel and hopefully one of them can find and fix the issue.

For what its worth the properties for the working movie using Gamebooster screen capture is;

Again, I have no idea about any of that, but if something there rings a bell for you, please do let me know.

Cheers mate, and thanks again.

Hi Naz

Well the first is Mpeg4, the data rate at 39795 kbps is quite high as data rates go.
Giving quite a large file size. That may be causing problems for VS in reading the video, just guessing here..

Are you able to set the recording properties for the fist recording setting the data rate to 15000 to 25000ish

The Frame rate of 60 suggested to me NTSC yet the second one uses 25fps and that’s Pal.

Where are you, do you use Pal or NTSC?
Video Studio Project Properties should reflect the Frame Rate, then the timeline would use the correct rate, not that that will affect the playback.

The second Video Properties are bog standard Mpeg1, you shouldn’t have any problems with those, however quite a low quality, Mpeg1 is a pretty older format
Although the Data Rate only shows as variable.
But clearly a smaller file size.

I would explore the options of the first recording to see if you have any other options
As I say 39000 is quite high.

Typical Video Studio template for Mpeg4
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 15000 Kbps
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 256 Kbps
