VS X6 C++ error on importing some files
Hi,
Just purchased VideoStudio X6 Ultimate and I am having some issues importing files either into a time-line or into a library. I have put the different days into different directories to aid me putting a DVD together. The files are mixed AVI and JPG files and some directories will import and others will not, the files were all collected within days of one another on a holiday using the same camera. I am importing using the capture tab then import from digital media button, this correctly gives me the select directory box but when I try and import certain folders I get a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error and a request to close the program. The error states that "this program has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way". I have tried moving the files to other directories, split them up and even tried to import one JPG from an affected directory with the same result.
I am running Win 8, with 8Gb of memory and 1.6 Tb of free hard drive space.
As I have said other files taken at the same time import with no issues, and as I only bought this two days ago I am not impressed so far, anyone have any idea's?

Re: VS X6 C++ error on importing some files
Hi Steve
and welcome to the forums.
Your best option is to transfer the files from the camera using either the cameras software or Windows Explorer and simply Copy and Paste from camera to a folder on the hard drive.
Then using Video Studio, right click the timeline and Insert Photo or Video.
You can also import to the library, again Right click and Insert Media Files.
You mention AVI, can you give more details, There are 800ish types of AVI, if they are DV-Avi then you are best connecting the camera via firewire and using the Capture Video process.
However you do say “digital” so I assume the AVI’s are saved to camera to a memory card as individual files? so if you are still having issues importing / inserting by right click then give further details of your files.

Re: VS X6 C++ error on importing some files
Trevor, thanks for the reply, unfortunately the files were taken from the camera some time ago, and it has since died so I am stuck with the downloaded files I have. The AVI files are 640 x 480 @ 24 fps, there are some with the same settings that uploaded fine, and also don't forget I have issues uploading some JPG's as well. The files were all taken with the same camera over a two week period and transferred to the pc using the camera s/w and all came down ok.
Not sure what other data I can give you on the files, if you can tell me where to look I'll get any detail you want?
Steve
p.s. I tried the files in a trial version of Pinnacle and they work fine with no issues, maybe I should have gone with that s/w?

If all the files are already on your computer then do not use the capture tab or insert from digital media - that may be you basic problem
If you want the clips in the timeline then right click on the timeline and from the pop out choose "Insert Video" or "Insert Photo" and browse to the folder on your PC and select them
If you want them in a library pane then click on the little folder icon in the top left corner of the library pane and browse to the video or photo as required.
The capture tab should only be used if the material is not on your computer and insert Digital media is basically for importing direct from a DVD.
the data that Trevor is asking for can be found by putting a video clip in the timeline and right clicking on it and then choosing 'properties' from the fly out - copy those properties - screen shot is fine - and post here

Re: VS X6 C++ error on importing some files
Brian,
If I try and import one of the files that I have an issue with directly into the library using your method I get a " the parameter is incorrect" error message, and that's both for AVI and JPG files.
It's the same issue if I try and import them into the timeline as well, and as I can't put them in the timeline I can't show you the properties of the files.
All the files play and display correctly in windows if I just click on them in win explorer.

Re: VS X6 C++ error on importing some files
Hi Steve
Can you upload a sample to a sharing site so we can try the files on our pc’s.
There is a free program MediaInfo that can read the properties of the video file, may help in identifying it.
Did the camera come with any software, usually installing that may installs the correct codec for your video files.
Doesn’t explain why Jpeg images don’t work?
There have been some recent issues using images, to be honest we don’t know why, but reports are getting more frequent???
Progressive images can be troublesome for some software, Exif details added on camera can also cause problems for some users but not all have problems?

Hi Steve
What happens if you try using the sample images from the library.
Try dragging an image to the timeline
Or right click an image and insert to Video track
does that work?

Re: VS X6 C++ error on importing some files
Trevor, that works fine for the files that will upload to a library, I just seem to have a bunch of files that won't. All the files were from the same source taken over a two week holiday, and all play fine in win explorer and all load fine in a trial version of Pinnacle.

Re: VS X6 C++ error on importing some files
Trevor, I have zipped up one of the avi and jpg files I have having issues with, if you can take a look at them I would appreciate it. I originally thought maybe it was a file size thing but much larger files import fine, and that makes sense.

Re: VS X6 C++ error on importing some files
Hi Steve
It seems strange that the problem is with a batch taken over the same period with the same camera.
How are things going with those samples, the forum has a FTP option details show at the top VS forum page
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=49164
Have you tried re-saving the Jpegs using a Image Editor, then try to import the new files?
Upps, just noticed your last post

Hi
The video is X-Vid Mpeg4
Do you have xvid installed on your PC
Jpeg Image
I am not having any problems in using this image
I have re-saved the image to remove the exif data just in case its causing problems for you.
I will send the new image to you via e-mail

That's very odd - I get slightly different properties - see below.
but both image and video loaded to my library and thence to timeline with no problem at all.

Re: VS X6 C++ error on importing some files
Hi Brian
Clearly Video Studio is having trouble reading this sample correctly.
Why we see different properties is a mistery.
I ran it through Media Info and that showed as
Format--Mpeg-4 Visual
Codec – XVID
Aspect 4:3
Fps – 24 progressive
Audio – Mpeg
Using X4 I get a warning on the first frame (Warning : nothing to output BFrame decoder lag) frame is black with white text?
I have no ides what that means
I think the best option would be to batch convert the lot to a more editable format.
