Crashed Frequently When Loading Picture Collection
I recently bought PaintShop Pro X6 Ultimate and am waiting for the $25 gift card to buy Aftershot Pro - but decided to download it and try the trial version first.
May not end up buying this product. It crashed repeatedly when trying to create the catalogue of my images. I set it to my picture directory and thought I could leave it to load the 49,958 images I've amassed in my digital collection. Alas it crashed repeatedly. Seems to be only able to load a few thousand and then it stops working. Thankfully it was able to resume when you restart it. But this was a long process, having to restart it every so often. Seemed to have a limit of about 4,000 images before it would crash.
Once the catalogue was loaded it seems to be OK - browsing my images seems to work fine.
I decided to give Corel a go after using Adobe Elements for a few years. Adobe is still 32 bit meaning it does not take advantage of my 32 GB of RAM - which i bought for photo processing. It also behaves badly on my three screen monitors. I'll be watching to see if Corel manages the three screen array in Eyefinity any better. Elements squishes up the menu bar making it impossible to select some of the actions, very frustrating. It also was not Windows 8 friendly. I had to make my system a dual boot system to run either Windows 7 or Windows 8 depending on the choice made at boot up.
I've upgraded to 8.1 and trust the Corel products will be compatible - they say they are. (although with Aftershot the Win8 icon is there proudly suggesting it is Win8 compatible but if you read the technical specs on that same webpage it lists Windows 7 but not windows 8? Curious they include the logo and suggest it is compatible but in the fine print is is not supported. It is working but as mentioned in the post it crashed repeatedly when loading my images into the catalogue.
I was pleased to see that Aftershot is compatible with AMD's HydraVision and will attach to my grid - a real god-send on a big three screen array.
I continue to wait for my Paintshop Pro - it was mailed to me (I have download bandwidth limit issues being a rural Canadian). It's only been 10 days, I'll give them the rest of the week then call next week when we are pushing three weeks. Hopefully it is in tomorrows post - i can hope eh?

Re: Crashed Frequently When Loading Picture Collection
Tried adding another smaller collection (under 400 scans of old photographs) - even then it choked on it and crashed - had to restart it to get all 400 to load.
I did get my $25 coupon - but now the price has doubled from $25 to $50 - so much for a discount. I'll hang onto it and maybe the price will drop after Christmas for a Boxing Day sale.
My parcel did arrive from Corel with my Paintshop Pro 6x Ultimate - now to learn how to use these programs and see if they continue to crash.

Hm,
no idea about the reason why ASP crashes when importing picture collection?

Buggy code ;-(
Seriously, import without previews.
Once the import is done let the previews generate and restart after crash or just restart after a smaller number of images.
cheers

Re: Crashed Frequently When Loading Picture Collection
Hi,
the import of the hole directory without the previews didn't run.
Now I'm trying to import step by step.
Or would it be an alternative to use the 32-bit version?

Re: Crashed Frequently When Loading Picture Collection
I have not seen any stability differences between the 32 and the 64 bit versions.
Usually the previews are getting leaky. So your import without preview generation should go through...
Any famous last words from the log file when it runs amok?
cheers

Re: Crashed Frequently When Loading Picture Collection
Hi,
the import directory for directory runs better than one big import.
But it crashes too.
Next time it crashes I will have a look at the logfile.
Is there a possibility to check that all pictures are importet?

Re: Crashed Frequently When Loading Picture Collection
There is no really good automated way to check the import.
You could code something in sqlite, but that seems excessive...

Hi,
after importing all directories step by step I could start an import over all directories.
Now I'm trying to get the preview thumbnails

Re: Crashed Frequently When Loading Picture Collection
I was having crashes too on import and at other times. There was an improvement if I turned off OpenCL in Preferences...Hardware acceleration.
But I wanted to use OpenCL, so I downloaded the latest driver for my Nvidia graphics card AND bought some more RAM, going from 4 to 8. No more crashing so far.

Re: Crashed Frequently When Loading Picture Collection
Upgrading the RAM won*t work on my notebook (4GB is maximum). But now it works so far.
I don't know weather I shoul buy it or not.

Re: Crashed Frequently When Loading Picture Collection
How current is your graphics card driver? Seemed like my crashes got worse when I enabled OpenCL in Preferences...Hardware acceleration, and got a little better when I turned off OpenCL. But downloading the latest driver for my graphics card has helped -- OpenCL is enabled now with no problems.
