Stitch 2 pics together

Post by Ken Veal »

I have a 10in w x 12 in H photo that is too big to scan so I have scanned the lower half as per landscape mode and repeated this with the top half, so now I have 2 overlapping halfs that I have rotated so that they are both upright. The idea is to
join them together to finish up with a copy of the original pic.
Can this be done
Am I going about this the best way, if not what is
How do I go about getting the result I want .PSPro X.

When doing a scan of a larger image to be blended to a single image later you need to make sure there is some overlap. This is like preparing a panorama.
So lets suppose you have 2 scans A and B each 10 in x 8 in (allows a 2inch overlap duplicated area).

1. File > New image and in the new image dialog box make sure there is enough space to hold the two scans side by side. eg 10.5 x 16 in.
2. Have the three documents on your workspace. Select the first scan (A) and drag the layer thumbnail over onto your new document (same as Copy and paste as new layer). Repeat with the second scan image (B).
3. You will now have three layers from top- B, A , New document .
4. Select the top layer B and change its blend mode to Difference and then slowly drag the B layer over the top of the A layer to try and allign them. When the image overlap area turns black there is no difference between the two layers in that section which means they are alligned.
5. Return the blend mode to Normal and then do Layers > Merge >MergeAll (Flatten)
6. Finally crop the image to remove any excess of the document.

Got stuck, thanks for the reply Paul. This is far as I got
1 File > New image-New Image Box Shows-
2 As image is Image is 10in W X 12- H. I Set new image to 10 in W X 14 in H in new image dialog box.
3 12% Raster 1 shows in chequer board box in workspace -Raster 1 shows in Layer palette.
4 Open both scanned images-top + bottom half’s –both jpg @ 15% background- now in workspace with 12% raster-
When I select each image , the layers palette shows each one as a background layer.

5 Select difference via blend mode in Layers palette
6 Top half of scanned image is now Raster 1
The images are too wide to fit over the chequered box and I cant find a way to drag them apart from with the blue bar at the top which is obviously not the way to drag them.
Help please

Ken,
In your step 4 You have selected your 1st scanned image. Drag the thumbnail from the Layers palette over onto that chequerboard (transparent) image -(thumbnail to image). Repeat with the second scanned image.
Then you select your Raster 1 image (the first document from the New command) and you should find it now has 3 layers. - scanned image top, scanned image bottom, transparent document.
Then you select the top layer and change that blend mode to difference.
Use the move tool to move the top layer to the right, the middle layer to the left and then as you move the top layer slowly over the middle layer you will see the overlap area go black when they are alligned.

This is the scenario so far
1 File > New image-New Image Box Shows-
As image is Image is 10in W X 12- H. I Set new image to 10 in W X 14 in H in new image dialog box
. (allows a 2inch overlap duplicated area).
2 Box shows transparent Image 1 @ 12% Raster 1--------same thing shows in Layers Palette (Raster 1)
3 Open bottom half of scanned image (A) –now in workspace
4 It is headed in workspace and Layers Palette as Background
5 Move it out the way then select it via blue bar at top
6 Drag Palette image(A) onto transparent image
7 Load top half of scanned image (B) into workspace
8 Drag image (B) from Layers Palette onto transparent image
9 Select Raster Image 1 (transparent image) -Raster 1, 2 + 3 shows in Palette
10 Select top layer B and select difference via blend mode in Layers palette.
11 Select Pick Tool to move image B up/down over image A ( it is in help but cant find move tool)
Got this far then had the following problems
.
A. “When the image overlap area turns black there is no difference between the two layers in that section
. which means they are aligned” -------have not seen the black area but got a reasonable
join
B Much of the bottom half of the original image is cut off-there needs to be a white portion similar in size
To the top white bit.
C The colour of the background is not the same in the 2 half’s.

I took this original image and split it into two smaller images with some overlap. This the same as what you would get if you scanned the larger image to produce a top and bottom image.
Image

My apologies for missing out a step in my original. I had assumed that you would know how to move items on a canvas with the Move tool. It is located beneath the Pick tool or vice versa. You really need to explore where all the tools are.

1. Setup- This shows the setup after I have placed the two images on the workspace and prepared a New document which is large enough to hold all of both images. I have also shown the location of the Move Tool.
Image

2. You then drag the thumbs of each image as shown.
Image

3. This shows the setup wih both images on the new document (Image1) and I have renamed the layers as Top and Bottom to match. I have used the Move tool to separate them so that you can see both images fit there.
Image

4. Now the blend mode of the Top layer is changed to Difference.
Image

5. I have turned off the visibility of the document layer so that we can see the way the Top and Bottom interact.
This shows a very rough allignment.
Image

6. This shows how moving the lower image up further creates a very close allignment.

Image

7. When the image overlap areas are fully alligned the overlap area turns black.

Image

8. Now I have changed the Blend mode of the top image back to Normal and you can see the images are alligned.
Image

Now you do Layers > Merge > Merge All (Flatten) crop the image and you are done.
If the colour variation in your lower image is not present in your original but does occur in your lower scan then that suggests some problem with your scan.

Excellent tutorial, hartpaul. It's worth mentioning given the precise work required, that when an object is selected with the pick/move tool it is possible to nudge it one pixel at a time by using the arrow keys on the keyboard. This could save much frustration and time.

Thanks for that Mark, I avoided mentioning the Pick tool as if you are not careful you can change the size of the image a tad in which case you would never get allignment, as well if not careful you could also riotate the image a bit.
With the Move tool you can also use the arrow keys for 1 pixel movements and also the Control and arrow keys for a bit larger movements as well

How do I reduce the size of both images, keeping all their content, to fit in the work space as shown ?

Left click the blue bar of each image and roll your mouse wheel one way to make larger and the otherway to make smaller. This is scaling the image up or down (the % figure shows what proportion of full size it is) .
This does not actually change the physical size of the images (number of Kb, pixels). That would be done by Image > resize.

One caution about this process - In the example Hartpaul illustrates he uses a photo that has been divided and the overlapping sections go completely black. The original question is about two joining two scans. Photos will align perfectly but one scan could be at a slight angle relative to the other and this may preclude perfect alignment. If that is the case I guess it could be fixed by selecting one image with the pick tool and changing the angle. Even a fraction of a degree is noticeable. The angle box in the tool palette does not accept negative values so for counterclockwise adjustment the difference from 360 needs to be entered (e.g. 359.7).

Just like to say thank you to Paul for all the time he has spent on helping me out here and on ,other posts throughout 2013.
Seasons greetings to you and have a good new year.
I am almost there but have a small problem. Here is my workflow put together from info in this post
1 File > New image-New Image Box Shows-
As image is Image is 10in W X 12- H. I Set new image to 10 in W X 14 in H in new image dialog box
. (allows a 2inch overlap duplicated area).
Box shows transparent Image 1 @ ( ie 12%) Raster 1-----same thing shows in Layers Palette (Raster1)
Roll mouse wheel to make its length fit all of workspace then more if you need to widen it (see step 6)
It can be moved by dragging on top blue bar
2 Open bottom half of scanned image (A) –now in workspace
3 It is headed in workspace and Layers Palette as Background
4 Drag Layer Palette image (A. bottom half) into workspace
5 Load top half of scanned image (B) into workspace
6 Scale images (this is not changing the physical sizes) A+B to fit in the workspace by
selecting the blue bar of each image and rolling the mouse wheel up or down As the
wheel is scrolled the % figure displays the proportion of the full size .The whole content
of both images are kept intact.
7 Select top image in workspace-click on its layer in palette to rename it top. Repeat for bottom half
Auto Action Box shows + says target must be promoted to a full layer-OK
8 Drag top and bottom Layer Palette images on to the transparent image
9 Using the Move Tool ( via Pick Tool > drop down arrow) to separate and check that both images
fit and show in full.
10 Select top layer B and select difference via blend mode drop down arrow in Layers Palette
11 Turn off the visibility of the document layer (via eye icon) so that you can see the way the Top and
bottom interact
12 Move the bottom image up until the two half’s are aligned and the overlapped area shows black.
Use the arrow keys for 1 pixel movements and Control and arrow keys for larger movements.*
13 Change the Blend mode of the top image back to Normal and you can see the images are aligned.
14 Go Layers > Merge > Merge All (Flatten), crop the image……… done !
* Note
One scan could be at a slight angle relative to the other and this may preclude perfect alignment. If that is the case I guess it could be fixed by selecting one image with the pick tool and changing the angle. Even a fraction of a degree is noticeable. The angle box in the tool palette does not accept negative values so for counterclockwise adjustment the difference from 360 needs to be entered (e.g. 359.7).

I have ended up with some of the bottom half of the lower scanned image missing.I am sure that both images showed in full
at step 9.Is it to do with scaling at step 6? Have I got the workflow correct ?

Make your canvas larger in the direction of what is missing. eg if it is a vertical image (10 x12 ) and you are missing some at the bottom when you allign, then increase that height from 12 to 14 0r 16. ie give yourself lots of extra space as you can always crop excess later.
