Ken, thanks for that. I'd been interpreting "lift" or "lifting" as bringing more illumination to the dark areas.

Apologies for the delayed response, was off the grid for the weekend and have just returned to a computer / Internet. I tried to use "Magic wand", with
"Match mode" = Brightness
"Contiguous" = unchecked
"Feather" = 0 - 2
"Tolerance": 10-15
then, in working area, click on dark area, magic wand can pick dark area. you can adjust "Tolerance" to pick more/less area later.
