Ken, thanks for that. I'd been interpreting "lift" or "lifting" as bringing more illumination to the dark areas.

Yes, it would be good to hear back from the OP.

Thank you to everyone who has posted in response to my original post - your thoughts and expertise are all greatly appreciated. Apologies for the delayed response, was off the grid for the weekend and have just returned to a computer / Internet. Cannot thank you all enough for your input - it certainly answered my original question thoroughly and accurately. Joel :)

I tried to use "Magic wand", with

"Match mode" = Brightness
"Contiguous" = unchecked
"Feather" = 0 - 2
"Tolerance": 10-15

then, in working area, click on dark area, magic wand can pick dark area. you can adjust "Tolerance" to pick more/less area later.
