When I add a 500mb avi file to a project,why does it become a 2.2gb file(high quality setting)? How can I make it remain the same size(500mb)? Thanks

In effect, you probably can't. There are over 800 different video formats which use the .avi extension. Some -- and I suspect yours is one of them -- are highly compressed, such as DivX/XVid which are in reality a type of mpeg-4 using the .avi extension. Depending on the degree of compression, you can usually fit about 90 minutes of such video into about 800 MB.

A DVD on the other hand, by international standard, MUST use mpeg-2 within certain parameters. And mpeg-2 is far less compressed than those types of .avi mentioned above. In the process of making your DVD, the .avi will be converted to mpeg-2 and expanded in the process to a much bigger file. Some quality will also be lost as mpeg generally, whether mpeg-2 or mpeg-4, is a lossy format and each conversion loses some quality. Anyway, that basically explains why your original .avi has now expanded by over four times its original size.

The only way I can think of to keep the DVD-compatible mpeg-2 down to 500 MB would be to apply a degree of compression -- which is done by lowering its bitrate -- down to a point where the resulting file is 500 MB. However, that would also involve an enormous quality hit, as bitrate also determines quality, and the higher the bitrate, the higher the end quality. I think you would find that the resulting mpeg-2 with a very low bitrate would be essentially unwatchable.

Probably the AVI file you put is quite large. Also the quality is the main cause why its too heavy. Ive seen some softwares online that can lower the quality.

What do you mean by manageable? You will have to give some information on your source file (size, length in time) and what you are trying to do with it - create a DVD or just a video file.
