How to create a Home menu

Post by Johan1 »

Hello everyone,

I'm new on the forum and I have some questions about VideoStudio. I'm dutch, so hopefully you understand my poor english.

I'm trying to make a DVD that shows different products video's. It's for in our shop, so people can see the products on a screen.

I have downloaded the Trial version of Corel VideoStudio 6, because this should have options to make a good menu. I've followed the following steps:

1. Create a New DVD.
2. Imported the different video's from the different products (it are just short video's). It's Step 1 in the DVD creation menu.
3. Went to NEXT, where I hade the options to make choose and edit a menu. I've changed it a bit with my own background and some other things and it looks great. I have 12 pages now.

But now I'm stuck. I've tried to find out via youtube video's and internet, but I'm not sure if this is possible:

I would like to have a main menu that shows up when the DVD is played. On this menu I would like to have 2 options;

1. Play all scènes, so all the scenes will be played after each other.
2. Select a scene, where you can just choose the scene you would like to see and afther that scene you have to choose another one (so it doesn't play further automatically).

I hope I've made my problem clear and I would be really gratefull if someone could explain to me what I should to. Thanks :)

Thank you for the fast reply. As far as I understand it's not really possible with this program.

Another question I have:
When I play, and all the scènes are played after each other automatically, after burning it as an ISO, all of the 'scenes' seem to be cut off too early. Like just a few seconds are missing on the end. Are there settings where I can change this?

Thanks again.

Yes you can do that...............

1 / Share Create Disc – Opens the burner module
2 / Top Left Add Video Add Video File
3 / for each video added a thumbnail is placed, these are Titles.
4 / Next window – Galleries – try using the Thumbnail or Text menu.
5 / Customise – layout will allow for 8 links per Menu Page, this menu is the Title Menu
If more than 8 a second Title menu page will be created. How many do you have?
6 / Edit Tab – deselect Motion Menu

7 / To the bottom of the window is a cogwheel, set the navigation controls
Default will repeat play –forever.
8 / Back to Menu will play the selected title and return to menu allowing you to choose another.
9 / Play next will play selected and all to end of disc, choose the one you prefer

Last window – Choose to Create a Disc Image , not disc.
This creates a ISO file, play the iso with VCL Media Player

Not sure how your method satisfies No.1 Trevor - "Play All"

if you just have titles on the menu page and each one returns to the main menu how does Johan1 - "play all"

Hi Brian

There is always a Play All option, usually the "triangle play" icon as part of the controls at the bottom of the menu.
If you insert the disc the Title menu shows, hitting the play button will Play All

If you select one of the thumbnails/title links, press a number on the remote then that Title will be selected - play and be affected by the Navigation Control settings. (back to menu)

At least that is how it works on my DVD Player

Hi

Sorry Johan

After inserting the disc simply hit the play button and the disc will play all.

If you select a title then it will play that title then respond to the settings made to the navigation controls.

Thank you all for your fast replies. Indeed, just pressing play plays all, that's great! And the Scène selection is just what I wanted too. Thank you very much so far. I'll think I understand a little bit better how it works now, so I'll try some things this evening.

I've already made a basic menu, and tried to burn it as an ISO to see if it works. Pressing play plays all, pressing a thumbnail plays that scene. So that's fine. But the menu (background, text, thumbnails) look al blurry. Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong? This image shows it, and no it's not blurry because of the filetype JPG:

Hi Johan

A little difficult to say why the image appears blurry without comparing with the original,
Jpeg images should be ok, what are the pixel dimensions of the Jpeg image ?

If you could make it available for download I would try it on a menu to see if I get similar results.

From the discs I have burned I usually use my own background image and haven’t noticed any quality problems?

As a side note, one of the thumbnail shows as a black screen, you can change the display to use another frame.

Two Options
1 / From the first window, play the clip to view a frame on the preview screen.
Right click the clip and Change Thumbnail

2 / From the Menu, right click the Thumbnail on screen, “Change this Scene Thumbnail” --- select a Start Position

Hello,

thanks for your reply. I managed to change the thumbnails myself, but I appreciate that you mention it.

I use a PNG file in the 16:9 size. Here you can download a ZIP which contains the file (actually 2 files, since I updated it a bit):

I thought PNG would give better results then JPG.

I'm really looking forward to your reply.

Hi Johan

Sorry for the delay, I have tested the image and there is a slight reduction in quality using the image as a background. Having said that some templates use filters, some use a vignette effect which remains when you change the image?

I then tried using a jpeg which seemed very similar a slight reduction in quality from the original.

I guess if the background used a video the blurriness may not be noticeable?

I wondered if creating a standard DVD at 720 x 576/480 was the reason so I created a AVCHD folder using 1920 x 1080, unfortunately I do not have a media player to play HD menus, (trial period expired?) but viewing the files on the pc seemed to be an improvement.

I think it may be just the reduction from original size down to standard definition size that is causing the quality issue?

I think it's pretty good now. Maybe we're too used to HD these days.

I have another question, if I burn it to DVD and play it on the TV / dvd player, do I select the scne that I want to play by pressing the number of the scene (so press 4 for scène 4?). Is it also possible to use arrows and eventually make the selected scene light up? So you can see were you are on the screen...

Thanks again.

Hi Johan

I have two DVD Players and both react a little differently to the remote control, so your model may not be the same as others.

But yes pressing a number should show that number on screen, then press play should play that Title, however my other player plays the Title as soon as I select a number.

Using the arrow keys navigates the links which highlight in some way, showing they are selected, what that looks like depends on the menu you have chosen to use.

Press the down arrow and you will navigate to the Play All button, usually at the bottom of the menu.
