Petrea is performing a direct dv to mpeg conversion which could be
good/bad depending on the machine.

I would use Trevor's settings of 6000kbps and lower field first.
8000kbps does work also if only a 1 hour video.

If you have problems read the "Sticky" post at the top of the VS forum.
Also if you are still getting a bad picture try recording with a known
good tape. The tape could be damaged or dirty which in turn can
damage the heads in your canon camcorder.

If you suspect that then connect the firewire output on the panasonic camcorder unit
to the firewire input on your camcorder and dub the tape, playing it back
from the panasonic unit and recording to a new tape in your canon unit.
That's a digital transfer without any loss.
