X6/64 doesn't show thumbnails

Post by jglazer »

Now that I've upgraded to X6 64 bit, my windows 8 explorer does not show .pspimage thumbnails. How do I fix this?

Thanks!

When you find an answer, I'd like to know too.

I did have Sagethumbs but it doesn't work with Win 8.1.

What I mean is, if there is such a little programme out there that enables us to see thumbnails, I'd like to know.
Sagethumbs worked great, but not in Win 8.1.

It has nothing to do with the amount of post or the fact I'm a moderator. I do not work for Corel, I'm just a volunteer and post here just like anyone else. Please keep post impersonal.

I didn't mean anything by that. I thought that psp was simply broken in my installation so the thumbs don't show. .JPGs and .TIFs and such come show fine without installing another program. And .PSPIMAGE did too for a while.

My interpretation of your post is that the EXPLORER does not show .pspimage thumbs. I checked in my Win 7 explorer and I don't see any thumbs for any images - I've checked alternative views but maybe I'm missing something. But in all the years I've been doing digital photography I have never used Explorer to view images; I used to rely on Picasa, which is free and provides lots of flexibility and now I use Corel AfterShot Pro for organizing my collection. I think your problem (if any) is with Microsoft and not PSP.

Do you use the Manage function in PSP? I assume that you are able to see all flavours of images with that tool. So the alternative to Explorer thumbs is to view them in PSP Manage. Lots of flexibility for adjusting size etc.

It's curious, though, since I just saved an image in PSP X6 (64 bit) in PSP image format. Then looked at Windows Explorer in Win 7 Home Edition (64 bit), and the thumbnail of the image showed up fine, even with a tiny icon in the bottom right corner using the PSP camera icon. See attached image.

The only images I can't get Windows to display a proper thumbnail of are Photoshop .psd images.

PSP thumbnails have been a problem for many years, at least on Windows systems.

Never solved by Corel or previous :-) the answer has always been download and run the (free) BOT PSP Thumbnail Handler.

So I tried this with X6, I don't see any reference to X6 on their site: http://www.botproductions.com/pspthumb/index.html

I reinstalled/ran the BOT handler (twice since I forgot to close some explorer windows first) but I still have a mix of thumbnails that cannot be viewed :(

Windows 7 64-bit SP1 up to date, and PSP X6 16.1.0.48 up to date.

Interesting. I can't get thumbnails in Explorer, even for jpgs. I wasn't aware of this until now - obviously didn't miss it. Checked Windows help, followed their instructions, nothing. Can't find any settings that may affect this feature.

I normally use Xplorer2 rather than Windows Explorer and there I can see thumbnails, including .pspimage.

Ken, I'm getting the same results. My pspimage files show as thumbnails but psd files do not. I took your image into PSP X6 32-bit and saved it as a pspimage file. What is interesting is that when I hover over the little camera icon in the corner of the thumbnail it references PSP X2 (which I do have installed by the way) even though the image was created in X6. Hopefully you can see all that in the screen shot.

Hmmm... when I hover the mouse over that camera icon, it just says PSPimage file, with size and date. No ref to any version of PSP.

Follow up several hours later: I think the BOT thumbhandler has been working slowly in the background! My thumbnails seem to be back: when I start to open an older PSP file in a folder not opened recently I see the generic icons immediately update to thumbnails. I have hundreds of PSP images organized into many folders, so these things take time. I think the handler may update a database somewhere. And as long as it works, I am happy! I have never liked the PSP "manage" stuff, so rely on the thumbnails when opening files.

For those that have trouble with their Thumbnail Cache, it can be deleted and the thumbnails will rebuild again.

Another Thumbnail handler option is MysticThumbs. It's the one I use, it's not free but I can highly recommend it. I've been using now for 4 years.
It will show all the PSP file types for all versions, Adobe file types, Camera Raw, most graphic file types, zip, rar, html and the list goes on. The thumbnails are shown directly in Explorer and the Dialog Boxes.
Supports transparency.
