Paint shop pro x3
Whoa am I out of date. But maybe there is still hope before I get X6.
I am trying to make a background transparent so that when I insert it onto a presentations slide, the item, a Christmas tree, has no background other than what is the background of the slide. I used the background removal process, asked for 0 opacity on the background and still when I save, or paste, it is in a rectangular white box.
I'm missing something simple, I know it. But thats been my day.
How do I essentially make it a stand alone little thing with no background?
Advice, and mercy appreciated.
Matthew

Re: background transparent
If you are saving it as a jpg that could be the problem as jpgs do not support transparency. You can save it as a gif or png to keep the transparency. There is a gif and png optimizer under File -> Export. Hope this helps.

There is a video on the Corel site which covers your situation.

Re: background transparent
Thanks for the ideas, and the tutorial is very good. Easy to follow. I use two screens so could keep it open, pause when needed and follow step by step.
Then, when I inserted my new image with the transparent background saved as a png, I still had the little tree surrounded by the nice white rectangle. The background did not show through at all.
then i used the gif optimiser and guess what - that worked. Must have missed a step in the PNG optimiser.
Well, I should have started this in July
thank you everyone for input and help.
much appreciated.

Re: background transparent
well, it worked, or it seemed to.
I have followed the tutorial, step by step. Yet, still, when I save the image and try and insert it into presentations X6 I still get the white background even though the checkerboard shows it is transparent. all the steps seem right. However, its just not doing the trick. Even images that I download that show transparent background from the get-go have the white image when inserted into the presentations program.
So I tried inserting it into Corel Video StudioPro x6. And behold the background was transparent, just as I wished. There must be a setting in Presentations, or a glitch that is messing this up. Any ideas? Or should I post this in the Presentations X6 forum for results?

I did this in PSP X3.
Is this what you are trying to do.
I took a scene

And a tree with the background removed (this might not show, but it is a png and the white area is transparent in PSP):

(The original png is here:

You can download it and drop into X3 to see that it keeps its transparency as a png. )
To produce this:

Re: background transparent
Hi Paul:
What you've done is exactly what I've been trying to do.
I manage to get the background removed, - even upgraded with the sale to PaintShop Pro X6 and well, still get the same result. As mentioned above, when I insert the PNG or GIF into Video Studio the background is transparent. I've got a feeling this is more an issue with trying to place an image with a transparent background into Presentations X6. I suspect I have a setting in that program that needs tweaking. funny thing though, is that I did get one of the images to go transparent, once. Isn't the definition of insanity doing the same thing again and again and expecting different results.
I've attached a little snowman png which should be transparent on the background now. If anyone sees something I did wrong, please don't be shy about a critique. Better to find the error and save what little hair I have from being pulled out.
And, maybe this is a Presentations issue and should be migrated to that forum.
thanks eveyrone

Re: background transparent
I had to do a search and found that Presentations is a bit like Miicrosoft's powerpoint program.
I am guessing that this means you prepare a series of final slides (image) and then put them into Presentations.
If I was working on this I would prepare the total image in PSP X (4,5,6) adding my text, placing the image (with transparency) on top of the image and then finally merging down or merging all.
Have done that with your snowman:

Then this final image would be added to your Presentations.
Or am I missing something?

Re: background transparent
O.K.
I see what you did, and will give it a try. That might make things a lot easier. AS with most software there is always a workaround. Thanks for the idea.
