Problem with 4-year-old PSP X4

Post by davew98 »

Hi guys! Newb here. I scanned the first 10 pages of this forum looking for a problem similar to mine with no luck, so here goes........
I've had 3 or 4 versions of PSP, curently using PSPX4, that I've been using no problem for a few years. Lately my adjustment boxes are getting smaller, not allowing the full controls to be visible. The drop shadow box is accessible but the controls for changing the horizontal and vertical points as well as the opacity and blur adjustments are partially hidden down the right side. I can still use the up/down arrows on each control, but the slider control for each is not showing. Is this a problem with PSPX4 or is it my computer? Other control boxes have similar problems (but no problems with the computer).

Issue #2- Will this persist when I upgrade to a newer version? I'm due to change soon, it's on sale right now I think.

I had no idea there were so many problems with PSP til I got here. Service Pack 1? and maybe 2? I had no idea. Maybe I had my auto-upgrade button turned on and just didn't know it. I did notice a few small changes a couple of times, but never got any notice that I had received anything new.

Have you by any chance changed your screen resolution? If so, try resetting to default and see if the issue goes away.

If not, you can try resetting the workspace. This procedure seems to correct a number of issues.

Before you do, if you have made any custom adjustments, save your workspace (File -> Workspace -> Save).

Now close PSP and restart it by holding down the shift key while double clicking the desktop icon for PSP X4. It will ask if you want to revert PSP to it's default state. Click OK and see if your issue has been corrected.

I'm surprised that you see a change in how X4 works after such a long time. What has changed in your system?

Kathy is referring to "Make it easier to read what's on your screen" under Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display within Windows. Setting this to anything over 100% causes a few adjustment windows (particularly layer adjustment) such as Histogram and the preview under Manage mode to not display correctly, as you describe. This has been corrected in SP1 of X6. However, SP1 introduced other errors so if you try X6, read through the postings and make sure to also download the hotfix.

Thanks for the replies, Kathy and Mark.
The screen resolution didn't make any difference. Double clicking on the PSP icon while holding Control did absolutely nothing. I haven't saved anything special in PSP, so it wouldn't be a problem.
I haven't made any major changes besides letting MalwareBytes fix some petty malware. I do have some I can't figure out how to get rid of: the WhiteSmoke Search (which hijacked my homepage), and a ShopAtHome toolbar.
If I can find my PSP CD I could re-install, but I'm in the middle of several batches of calendars.
Any more ideas?

Just wanted to double check something. To reset the workspace you hold down the Shift key while double clicking the PSP icon. You mentioned the Control key so I wanted to check back with you.

Thank you, Kathy_9! That's what I was doing. The shift key did work, kinda..... I got a note asking if I wanted to reset PSP stuff. The next box said I had an item duplicated, to change one or ... but it wouldn't let me change it. The next box was asking about file associations, so I think I did reset PSP to default. My Drop Shadow Box did change ever so slightly. The slider I mentioned is barely visible now, so that's a step in the right direction. Maybe after a reboot it may be better. If I could post a pic, I could show you the screen shot I saved after the reset.maybe I could reset again, would there be any harm in that?

A reboot is a good idea and there is no harm in resetting the workspace again if you need to.
