Putting a folder in the navigation window

Post by jimbir »

I have a folder where all of my photo and graphic files are stored. It does not show in either the collections or the computer pages of the navigation window. I've tried the "add folder to collection page" shown on the online help site but It doesn't work. How do I add the folder?

Thanks Jim B.

Hi Jim

Go to the Navigation palette.
Click on the Collections tab.
Expand Folders by click the down arrow.
Click on Brows More Folders.
When the Brows For Folder window opens, search for the folder containing your images. Click OK.
The folder will now show in the Navigation Palette.
Images will also show in the Organiser palette.

It seems that there may be a problem for a few users with the Collections and Navigation functions - see http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=51722. If Trueblue's instructions don't work you may be one of those suffering from this malady. It would be useful to know what is common for those who have trouble getting Collections to work.

Thanks.
His screen shot is from X6 I'm using X5. After some experimenting I Discovered that you can only add a folder that has images in it. I was trying to add a folder that contained other folders and that wouldn't work. It showed in the search window but I had to drill down to the sub folder containing the images. This might be the reason other people are having this same problem.

Navigation is the same whether the version is X5 or X6. There have been no changes in that.

I wasn't aware some users were having difficulties. As it's only 'some' then doubt it's a PSP issue.

Not quite true. If you look at the screenshots I posted in the thread you looked at, you will see folders in Collections labelled "2012" and "2013" with + (for X5) or triangle (for X6) to the left of the name indicating subfolders. Neither folder contains pictures and I added them without any problem. They are the top of the tree and I can access the subfolders which contain the pictures just as I would in the Computer choice. There is no need to add the subfolders individually and you can maintain neat organization.

If someone wants to start over again with the Collection, go to C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Corel PaintShop Pro\16.0\Database and delete (or to be safe, rename) the two databases. You can then add to the Collections in the normal way - new databases are created.

Thanks for the reply.
I have one "top of the Tree" (TOTT)folder that I can't add to collections. I tried it with another TOTT folder and it was added to the collections. However, only 6 of the 19 subfolders in it show up when I expand it. The folder I can't add contains 32 subfolders some of which contain subfolders. It almost seems like there's some kind of limit imposed by PSP.

I've experimented some more. I was able to add My Documents, which contains about 35 subfolders and no pictures. Also C:\Users\YourName, starting at YouName which contains hundreds of folders and subfolders including all my documents and pictures. So I don't perceive a limit on the number of subfolders or levels.

I wonder if in the folders that are rejected there are files that PSP doesn't "like". You could try adding some of the folders that were rejected individually (not from higher in the tree), starting at their level, and see what is unique about the folders that are then rejected. I seem to recall that someone else ran into a similar problem and that in his case the culprit was files that contained hierarchical keywords - try a search here on that word if you'r interested.

Stupid question: is the folder you're trying to catalogue excluded under File/Preferences/General program preferences/manage/uncatalogued folders? Either explicitely or by belonging to an excluded tree?
Second question: on that same manage page: do you "Allow cataloging to complete after exiting the application"?

No

There is no check box for this in the manage preferences.

I'm at a loss, and when I'm at a loss I save my workspace (because I have lots of custom menus etc.) and then close PSP. When I restart I hold down the shift key while starting PSP and click Yes or something when asked if I want to reset PSP to defaults. The PSP Hail Mary Play has always worked for me until now, admittedly using X4.

Jimbir:

Have you tried to select directly from Computer in Navigator the folders that did not show in Collections? Can you drill down in Computer to the photos you want?

Yes. The folder isn't listed in the computer tab.
Yes. I can drill down to any subfolder and add it to the collections list. it's the "top of the tree" folders that either don't show or show with many of the subfolders missing.

I'm confused as to how you can 'drill down to subfolders' in folders that aren't listed in the Computer tab. How do you do that? PSP won't show hidden files or folders in Computer or Collections view.

I don't know what PSP5 does if hasn't finished cataloging a folder and/or tree when you exit the program. In my X4, where I've turned off cataloging after exiting the program, I have to go to the top level folder in Collections and then click on Refresh in the second icon of the Thumbnail palette to complete or continue cataloging.

I can drill down to any subfolder in "browse more folders" on the collections tab.
