Cannot render video - Unspecific error

Post by okyou »

I have been using X5 for almost a year and everything seems find until lately when I up graded my system to window 8.1. I have assemble a 40 min video but when I tried to use 'share' to output to MP4 iphone/ipad HD,the rendering go halfway then the VideoStudio crashed with an error 'The program has encountered an unspecified error' and a DMP file and ask me to contact Corel support. My project only has 1 video tack, 1 voice track and 1 music track and the project file is 17,426 KB. If I disable the voice track, then the project can render successfully. Since the voice track is recorded using VideoStudio voice over with WAV format, I went back and convert all voice into mp3 to smaller size but still crash when render halfway. My system should have enough resources to process this 40 min video.
Window 8.1 pro 64x
16GB ram
CPU i7
Hard drive 2T.
I have assemble 40 min video with heavy voice before in XP and it render without any problem.
Is there are issues between VideoStudio and window 8.1 64x ? Is there a limit to VS project size, or voice track size ? Can you provide some idea how to resolve this problem.I read some of the posts and you recommend to manfully uninstall the software and reinstall the software. I am reluctant to do this, not at least after I can output my project to mp4, because it might wipe out my setting, templates, libraries, and even my project file.
Can you provide some recommendation to solve this issue without full uninstall/reinstall ? Do you know of any tool so I can read the DMP file ? I don't understand what good to have a DMP file when my software have passed the 30 day or 1 time support warranty?

It has been very frustrate to spend all this time to assemble a video and at the end cannot produce a sharable version. I was about to upgrade to X6 but now I have to think twice if this issue is not resolved. What good are all thees fancy new features in X6 to me if I cannot produce a sharable version of my project ?

Thank for any help you can share.

First off, you need to keep in your mind the fact that none of us here in the forum are Corel employees. We are users like you who volunteer their time to help other users.
Is there are issues between Visual Studio and window 8.1 64x ?
Please note that the product name is Video Studio and NOT Visual Studio (which is a rather expensive Microsoft program which does other things). And I suppose you also have to ask if it is specifically Video Studio X5 which is incompatible with Win 8.1. The answer is that none of us know since we don't work for Corel. However, X5 was produced when Windows 8 was being developed and others have used it successfully with Windows 8. But 8.1 may have produced other changes which affect some of the ways that X5 works. Some users are, however, reporting errors even with X6 and Win 8.1, so I guess it is safe to assume that X5 too is not fully compatible with 8.1. But unless some other user here has had the same problem as you and found a solution, the only people who can perhaps correct the problem is Corel through an update pack -- though I have to say it is unlikely that they will release an update pack for X5 since it is no longer the current version of the program.
Is there a limit to VS project size, or voice track size ?
The answer is no to both of these, there is no limit, and your project sounds as though it is only an average size and not large at all. However, can you please tell us the format of the video and of the original sound track? Right click on one of the clips in the timeline or library window and copy ALL its Properties here or take a screen grab and upload it here.
Do you know of any tool so I can read the DMP file ?
Again, the short answer is "no". No one, apart from Corel, can interpret those files and none of us here in this forum have ever known how to read them.

I know that what I have said must sound pretty negative and not helpful at all. But as I already said, unless someone has experienced the same problem as you and found a solution, or has some other possible solution in mind, then Corel may be the only ones who can help resolve it. I will, however, undertake to draw your problem to their attention and see what their response is.

Just to make your properties more readily accessible, here is the image embedded in okyou's uploaded document:
okyou properties.jpg
It shows absolutely regular AVCHD fully progressive 1920 x 1080p video at 59.94 full frames per second and a data rate max of 25999 kbps, with Dolby stereo audio at 256 kbps. And I have to add that there is no reason why this should not be processed normally by VS X5 (and X6) apart from the possible conflict with Win 8.1 which is the subject of this thread.

Can I ask, though, if in this particular project, you ticked the box under Settings in X5 "Enable 50/60p Editing"? And though you have chosen the output specifically as mp4 iPhone/iPad, have you tried any other output format? Does it work? In other words, I am trying to find out if the problem is a general one, or relating specifically to that mp4 iPhone/iPad format...

By the way, I can now confirm that I have already sent an email to Corel, drawing their attention to your problem.

I have already received a reply from Corel saying they tested X6 with Win 8.1 while the latter was in the beta stage and found no problems. However they did not mention X5. But they have asked if you could send me your DMP file and I will pass it on to them.

Hello Ken.

I have to use 7zip the DMP file because the attachment size limit is 500k and the original file is 6.2 MB. I have done some testing as you recommended on rendering to different format. So far it seems my problem is all in the mp4 format. I tried Iphone 4/Ipad HD,iPod/iPad mpeg 4(640x480), and Mobil Phone MPEG-4 and they all crashed at the same place 29% completed. However, when I render on DV (16:9) and HDV1080i-60i there is no error. Maybe you can pass along this information to Corel as well.

Thanks for all your help. :D
