Paint Shop Pro Trial Install fails

Post by difjuz »

After nine years I finally bought a new computer.
I installed PSP X2 on my new machine, and it works pretty well, but I would like to upgrade to PSP X6.
I tried installing the trial version three times, and it will not start after installation. I get an error mesage which says that the files are 'either corrupt or illegally modified'.
I'd probably buy PSP X6 if I could try it first.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Did you try downloading the trial again.
Have you tried to install the current trial on another computer.
(It is possible that your downloaded trial may be corrupt).

Another thing to check is make sure Protexis licensing is started and set to Automatic in Services.

Thanks for your answers guys, a little humor always helps to ease tension. :D
But, seriously, I want to try X6, so I need some real answers.

And what, pray tell, is a real answer?

Both the answers above (by hartpaul and Kathy_9) are quite serious in their intent. If you indeed do have corrupt files somewhere, a new download of the trial version would appear to be indicated. And the Protexis licensing system -- which no one here likes, by the way -- is nonetheless a reality we all have to live with. And more to the point, it has in fact caused some few users problems in the past, both in PaintShop and Video Studio. If you start Windows Task Manager, you will, as Kathy_9 has already indicated, find it in the Services tab. And I'm not laughing!

I am sorry that you thought that was humorour, but it was a real answer.
1. If you try installing the current trial on another computer and it produces the same error then you can suspect that the downloaded trial may have been partially corrupted.
If it installs correctly on another computer than it indicates that the current trial is functional and the problem lies with something on your computer.

2. If it fails to install on another computer as well then you may have to download again.

I have successfully installed X6 on a desktop computer under XP and Win 7 (have two hard drives and I just switch the cabling from the XP to the Win 7 drive when either is required)
I have also installed the original trial on a laptop and the updated trial(includeds SP1) on a second laptop.
In all cases no problems at all.
All computers are updated before installation , and I run AVG antivirus and Zone Alarm basic as firewall and also Spybot Search and Destroy. None of these seems to interfere with the installation or running on any of my computers.
The Win 7 and XP machines do not have any extra log ins available or required - they just boot straight into the desktop as no one else uses the computers. I like to keep things as simple as possible.

I do think there is a problem in the PSP X6 trial installer. Too bad.
I might have purchased it with the Blackfriday/cybermonday sales going on.
I guess I won't upgrade from PSP X4.

And just FYI, I have the "Protexis Licensing" service started, and I downloaded the file trial twice, and I know it's not corrupt. Same problem.

I have the same problem as madbrain while attempting to install PSP x6 Pro or Ultimate from trial download (including problem message indicating "BEX"). I attempted a number of different things to fix--no solution yet. Here are a few of the many things I tried (some at the same time):

re-downloaded several times (from different download locations)
repair Microsoft .NET
shutdown firewall & other security (including user security settings)
disconnect network
run as Administrator
use a different default browser
delete all temp files on entire machine
multiple machine restarts
compatibility test / run in compatibility mode
allow windows to search for a solution online
I found the instructions to do a safe mode install, but the required zip file was not available for download

In the past, I have successfully installed PSP X6 Ultimate on a Mac Virtual Machine running Windows XP. Just can't get it to install on a Windows 7 laptop (Windows 7 professional, service pack 1, Lenovo x300).

Corel's PM announce an alternative trial version to fix installation problem, but seems they decide not to replace the web version with this one.
You can try to use this version.

Well, I've returned almost two months later to try to get any of these trials of PSPX6 to work, to no avail.
Good thing I know how to use the GIMP pretty well, it does most things faster and better than PSP anyway, and it's FREE!
So screw Corel, and screw all the people on this board who gave me idiotic answers ( which is everyone.)
