In my movie class with the VS editor, we have discovered that an attractive collection of music files in .mid format (midi) play Ok in windows media player, but are unrecognised by VS.
Wikipedia gives up a lot of data on the .mid (midi) format, including why windows supports it, and its old, predates PC's let alone the internet. The plunging costs of storage and transmission bandwidth have pretty much made it a fossil. So, given that VS cannot read .mid files and it seems unlikely it ever will, is there a translation program around that can read .mid music files and then enable 'save in' formats that are readable by VS like .wav, mp3 et al.

Re: Unrecognised Midi music files
A simple Google search gives a number of returns. There are a number listed here -- but be careful to avoid clicking on any of the large "Download" buttons in the top left of the page. Instead click on the chosen converter, wait till the new page appears and download from there: http://free-midi-converter.software.informer.com/
