Cannot Create Profiles

Post by gNatFreak »

Hello,

I was having an issue in Corel VideoStudio Pro x4. I could not create custom video output files (profiles; see attached image). So I ran VideoStudio as admin. No luck. I reinstalled it as admin and ran it as admin. No luck. I tried manually changing the files corresponding to the default video profiles with notepad. Initially I was denied access. Through a rigorous method of trying to figure out why I was denied access to changing the files, I found out that I was denied access to even renaming the Corel folder (with nothing running corel programs).

I downloaded a better version of task manager to figure out what must be running in the background. Nothing was running anything located in the Corel folder. I still couldn't even rename the corel folder on an admin account. I booted in safe mode (and then I could change the folder name, etc), and changed one of the default video output profiles. The changes stuck even across computer reboots, but my changes were not recognized in VideoStudio (no clue why; I changed the profiles found in the profile subfolder of Corel).

So, I figured what with the sale going on, I might as well upgrade to Pro x6. Bought it. Uninstalled VideoStudio x4 completely. Deleted the Corel folder entirely from Program Files (x86). Installed VideoStudio x6. Got it launched as admin, attempted to create a profile, and got the same error. Trying to rechange the Corel folder results in the same denial of permissions that I used to have, even after running it as admin, disabling UAC, and changing the security permissions on the folder itself.

And now I'm here. I'm at my wit's end trying to figure out how to create a custom profile. Attached is example errors.

If nothing else, I would greatly, greatly appreciate it if anyone could create a profile that is the exact same as the WMV HD 720 30p default profile, only with better sound (24 bits instead of 16 bits and/or 48/96KHz instead of 41KHz), and then direct me to which folder I should place said filed in (as changing stuff in the profile folder didn't seem to make much difference).

TL;DR:
Cannot create custom profiles. Please help.

Update: I have installed Videostudio Pro x6 on my laptop, which has never had a corel product installed on it before. It's Windows 7 x64 bit edition as well. I get the same exact error when trying to create custom video profiles.

Also, can people see my computer specs through my account? I inputted all the relevant information in when I registered.

Hi

Creating WMV profile problem is a windows 7 issue User Account Control. You need to be running the program with Administrator rights, then windows will allow you to create the Wmv profile.
for XP some folders/files may be set as read only, for XP changing that allowed you to save the new profile, I think W7 is a little different.

From your desktop, right click the Video Studio icon and Run as Administrator,
The User Account Control will ask “Allow program to make changes to Computer”
Best to say yes. :)

Hopefully you will be able to save those WMV templates.

You will have to start VS with Run as Admin every time if you wish to make changes.

gNatFreak -- since you have already mention UAC, Admin rights and security issues, can we assume you have read the following post (and what follows): http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 72#p210072

Interestingly enough, I had not (even after doing much searching). Guess either I'm blind, or searching for Windows 7 (rather than 7/vista) made me miss it.

Anyway, it definitely helped me. Based off of that post, I found out I've been messing with the wrong folder (though I did completely disable UAC, so that should have fixed it). I had thought the profiles were exclusively stored in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Pro X6\Profiles
but apparently the profiles are stored in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Components\Encoder\Profiles
which I would not have guessed.

So I went to the profiles folder in the second pathway, and changed the permissions for my user account to full control, and now I can create custom profiles and save them in the default folder. I'm still somewhat surprised disabling UAC completely didn't fix the issues, but hey, you've helped me tremendously!

Thanks!

TL;DR: The Profiles folder in the Corel folder is not the correct folder.
