I got there in the end but by using a mixture of software, one last question would be for next year do I convert my clips to mpeg2 before I put them into the VS timeline?
Your best option is to edit the MTS HD video files.
Then Create a Video File - Same as first Video Clip should create a new file using the original properties.

The new MTS video is your final movie.
1 / you can copy to USB, plug into the TV/DVD usb port and play in full HD
2 / Provided the file is small enough -- Burn a Hybrid disc, this is using HD video to burn on a standard 4.3 Gb disc, you need a Bluray player to play these discs.
3 / Burn a Bluray Disc, you need a Bluray burner and Bluray Player
4 / Convert the file to Standard definition allowing you to burn a Standard DVD

The properties you select to render your project depends on the properties of the original video file.
I do not think you have given that detail.

Take it step by step, but edit the MTS first.
