Greyscale (16 bit)

I do a lot of scanning and editing of old B&W magazine articles. When I start a new image, I see the choice of setting it up as "grey (8 bit)" or "grey (16 bit)". Can someone tell me the pros and cons of using either? (I generally scan at 300 DPI.)
