VS X6 - Sony HDR-CX290 - m2ts file crash

Post by HCN3 »

I tried to provide as much information in the subject line as possible. I have been keeping my VS installations up to date and so I have VS X6 installed on Windows 8.1. I just purchased a new Sony HDR-CX290 camcorder. I have transferred 3 or 4 video files from the camera to my computer using the Sony transfer software which saves it as a *.m2ts file. VS X6 can open the files, I can place it in my timeline. I can run the split by scene and other edit utilities. I even have gone through the process to test and create a disc without any issue. However, if I try to PLAY the clip in the project window, VS x6 crashes. I have uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled VS x6. I have tried reinstalling codecs. The files play without any issue in Nero and Windows Media player. Windows Movie Maker seems to open the files without issues as well. However, I have had my system to make discs via VS for a while now so I would prefer to not have to use a different program. Especially since I have invested in VS x6. I am outside my warranty window so from the sounds of it, I have no recourse to let Corel know if this is a bug or a known issue. I have installed VS X6 SP1 as well and it hasn't fixed the issue.

Does anyone on the forum have any other ideas that I may be able to try to address the issue?

Thanks!

Many other users can play AVCHD files (which is what your camera produces) with no problems -- so the question is whether it is footage from that specific model or because of Win 8.1's interaction with VS which is the problem.

Have you tried simply using Windows -- and not the Sony software -- to transfer the video to your computer? That will probably load it with the .mts extension rather than .m2ts (though in effect they are one and the same). If so, then try it with .mts footage and see if that plays.

I tried directly copying the file from the camera to my computer. It does come in as a MTS file but crashes VS X6 in the project window the same way. Frustrating to say the least. I guess I can try to create projects without it but would really like it to work. I guess I will have to try to pay the $20 to get a ticket open with Corel so I can send them the DMP file.

Do you have another computer with different operating system (e.g. Win 7) and VS installed which you can try it on?

I haven't had the time to try that yet. Obviously I would prefer to not to have to try that but I understand that it will provide some additional insight into the issue. I did open a case with support so we will see if they find something as well. I will keep everyone posted. These forums have been great to learn how to better use VS so I have been thankful for your help.

Had an interesting change as well... if I place the video in the timeline and change the preview window to project, it plays just fine. If I highlight the clip in my library, select clip in the preview window, it crashes. Hopefully it is just a bug and working with support can provide an update to fix it.

Check out if Smart Proxy is enable.

Setting>smart proxy manager>enable smart proxy

I did it, and its not crushing for now...

See this prior post by me about a high bit rate bug in VS. Do you know the bit rate of the video that is producing your problem? High bit rates might explain your issue

Well the upshot from support is that they feel my PC is on the lower/minimum end of specifications for the video I am trying to work with. Although likely, it does still technically meet the requirements to work with the application. I will try the smart proxy and will update with the bitrate on the MT2S files to see if anyone else has some additional insight.

** UPDATE **

The files from the Sony camera have a VBR of up to 16000 kbps so I am assuming that I may be hitting that bit rate issue that Al mentioned.
