Hi,
After updating to Ubuntu 13.10 amd64 I had some trouble installing AfterShot Pro. I managed by installing de i386 version instead of amd64 version. I checked the 32bit and 64bit binaries and they turn to be the same, amd64 is just a convenience package for an easier installation in a non multiarch aware environment.
It shocked me a bit because I thought that this kind of programs always try to take the most of the hardware they have (for example OpenCL). Being able to use the 64bit instructions sets wouldn't be a feasible way to improve performance? Isn't it worth the trouble ? Maybe the actual code base of AfterShot Pro makes it too difficult ?
There seems to be only one installer for windows so I suppose this is not only a Linux related matter.
I'll greatly appreciate some informed enlightment from the developers of AfterShot Pro. Is not a criticism, if the software is perfomant is performant, who cares if it is 32 o 64 bit, but I'm curious about it.
Why Aftershot pro is not 64bit?

Re: Why Aftershot pro is not 64bit?
There isn't really a large performance advantage in switching to 64bit as long your working set keeps below 2GB (i.e. you don't use a lot of RAM), you don't do a lot of system calls. (x64 has an instruction for that) and don't use 64bit math.
Also I think the reason ASP isn't available in 64 bit (but I might be wrong) is that noiseninja isn't available in a 64bit version).
Personally i would love to see a move to 64bit and a complete drop of the 32bit line. Every PC sold since 2005 is x64 capable, why stick to obsolete instruction sets? (Especially with windows XP dropping out of support next April)

Apart from the NN issue the Qt library version used is only 32bit.
With Corels glacial pace I expect it will take a while before a true 64bit version will show up.
The 32bit AS is still faster than the 64bit LR
cheers

I believe all of the 3rd party plugins would also have to be ported to 64-bit.

While my computer may be capable of 64 bit, much of my software isn't. I'd hate to have to upgrade all the software and drop some which does not work in 64 bits.

That is true.kross wrote:I believe all of the 3rd party plugins would also have to be ported to 64-bit.
A recompile does take some time but it is not hugely onerous.
Unless we get real advantage from 64bit which I dont think we would then I would rather that Corel did something really useful with the developer time, e.g. fix the bugs with SDK, fix the right hand side magenta pixel line on the D600 images, provide new RAW support for Fuji XTrans cameras and other makes e.g. Olympus, Nikon, Canon, etc.
Still learning after all these years!
