Can't install or uninstall PSPX6 or PSPX5

Post by AMDHeaven »

My system became corrupted and there is no longer a listing in Programs and Features for either PSPX6 or PSPX5. Attempting to reinstall them and uninstall them generates the error: "Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run setup again."
PSPX6 was installed to a Ramdisk, and the partition no longer exists. The registry entries are there on C:\ though.
I've tried recreating the Ramdisk partition, and rebooting but the copy saved to disk won't load.
Checked for the errant uninstall.exe program for both with no luck.
There are hundreds and maybe thousands of registry entries. I've tried deleting several hundred with no luck.
Also an alternative to regedit that has Find/Replace would be a help.

If the system became corrupted, you might be better off doing a clean install of windows 7 again as there mey be other parts / programs corrupted that you do not know about.
I know this is a pain as you then have to find all your installation CDs and downloads of all programs to reinstall them again.
After having to do this about three times (one with a hard drive starting to fail) I have cloned my system drive 1. after a clean install and update, 2. After adding the can't do without programs, 3 after adding a lot of other programs.
This means I have 3 cloned drives ready to slot into my desktop after any corruption changes. It is like having a set restore point that you can duplicate and use at your convenience.
The cloning of a drive only takes about 3 hours or less compared to the 6+ hours to find and reinstall all systems and programs .

In the case of a laptop I have cloned images at the different points.
In both cases after I have been operating for a year or so and have a lot of new programs added I will make a further clone to replace 3. above so that I have a new restore point for that one at least.
There are a number of cloning programs available. I have used HDClone.
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867

Thanks for the heads-up about creating an image of a hard drive. I've done this, however it probably won't help, because PSP X6 was installed on a Ramdisk. This is where a separate hard disk is created in RAM, and at system shutdown its supposed to be copied to the hard drive. Then at startup its supposed to be loaded into RAM. When I checked my Ramdisk Plus installation it was glitchy and all of the drives disappeared. Even recreating the Ramdisks didn't reinstall PSP X6.
What I do know is that most of the registry entries for PSP X6 referenced the Ramdisk. All of the PSP X6 files on C:\ were removed also along with those registry entries. There was no reference to PSPX6 in the Programs Features utility, so there was no way to uninstall it properly. All of the registry entries were removed. My guess is that a *.dll contains an entry that is forbidding the reinstallation. Halloween and I'm in dll hell! lol. Some Corel tech could probably tell me which one to edit, but I'm not sure where my customer service registration number is. Oh for 36 hours to a day. :|

The trick to getting PSPX6 to uninstall after losing an installation to a Ramdisk was to remove registry entries referring to the installation on the Ramdisk. So while the standard installation and some of the files were in C:\Corel, the Ramdisk entries were to P:\Corel. If the entries to the Ramdisk remained and an installation was tried it generated an error 1327, P:\Corel\Paintshop not found, and installation would fail. Trying to use Windows > Programs and Features uninstallation generated an error that the program could not be found and should the program entry in the list be removed. Once all registry entries with data and containing to P:\Corel were removed, reinstallation to C:\Corel would continue correctly (there are dozens and dozens of registry entries that do not contain data, look for a 1 in the Regedit column for Data). Recreating the Ramdisk as P:\ still generated the error since P:\Corel\* did not exist. My Ramdisk was supposed to save a copy of itself to a standard hard drive partition to be reloaded into RAM every time the system booted. So there was P:\Corel in RAM, and P:\Corel on a hard disk. In haste, the Ramdisk partition must have been deleted and PaintshopX6 not uninstalled first, leaving the conflicting entries in the registry, and deleting the copy on the hard disk at the same time. This same inability to reinstall Paintshop will happen if it is installed to Ramdisk and Windows is restored from a saved System Image of only C:\. So when saving a system image with Ramdisk(s) partitions make sure to include them specifically. If this can't be done then uninstall Paintshop before backing-up the system image or the registry will contain entries that stop Paintshop from being installed after the root C:\ Windows drive is reimaged.
