saving still images from video footage

Post by uleadme »

Hi All,

I'd like to know whether, and if so, how, it is possible to save still images from a video file in VS9.

Yes, I know it is possible to "save the current frame as a still image" in the the library, but as far as I am aware this means it can only be reinserted as a still image in a video project, whereas I would like to save stills, in fairly high resolution as digital photos.

So, is what I want to do possible in VS9.

thanks for you time,

phil

I'm afraid, fairly high resolution is a no go, you are limited to the framesize of your video, less than .5 megapixels.

AFAIK, I dont have VS9, you save a frame as a still image and store it on your HDD for later use. You are free to access that image for anything you want, if you remember where you stored it that is.

"Save as still image" saves the file in a standard format such as BMP or JPG (selectable in the Preferences) at the same resolution as the source video.

It will not take mediocre analog capture video and produce a high-quality still image that is comparable to that of a megapixel digital camera. The only enhancement that UVS can make is deinterlacing the video.

Thanks heinz-oz and THoff, but my real question is how can I save these still images on my hard drive. At present, I just save them to the VS9 library, but I don't know how to get images from this library on my hard drive. Copy and paste doesn't work, and there doesn't seem any other way to save these images. But I know there is a way, so do either of you know what it is.

As for the quality, I think if the video is of high quality, the images should be at least OK.

regards,

Phil

The images are actually on your hard drive already. The thumbnail may be in the library, but the picture itself will be in wherever you specified the "working folder" to be. In my case that's on the external hard drive; the path is E:\Video Studio 9

Thanks rwineyer. I actually just worked that out by following what THoff said and going to the preferences dialogue box. I now know where VS9 sends the saved images, so thanks again to all who responded.

I suppose the issue is how to get really good saved images, but I suppose that depends on the video quality.

You can also right-click on any file (whether in the timeline or the library) and view the file's properties, which include the name and location.
