Jaggies when panning - can shutter speed have an effect

Post by jparnold »

Hello all

I have recently upgraded to a HiDef video camera and at first was recording at 1080i (interlaced) and now changed to record at 1080p (progressive).

I have noticed when viewing (on my PC) some of the clips I recorded that there are 'jagggies' along the edges of objects.
I have found that this is a result of 'interlace' and possibly panning too fast.
My camera displays a warning "camera is panning too fast" if in fact I do pan too fast but this was not the case as when recording with panning I usually pan so slowly that I often have to increase playback speed during editing AND also the clips I viewed were on people walking in the same direct at the camera, hardly panning too fast.
With that said I am thinking (and hoping) that it was a result of using 1080i (interlaced).

This begs the question - Can shutter speed have an effect. The reason for the question is that I have noticed that my new camera (seems to) automatically sets the shutter speed faster and leave the aperture wide when there is a lot of light (I can see that by changing to MANUAL mode and noting the aperture and shutter speed.
If this is the case then should try using a NEUTRAL DENSITY filter to force the camera to use a slower shutter speed? I used to have to do this with my old MiniDV camera to prevent overexposure in brightly lit scenes (the shutter speed never seemed to change without me manually doing so).

Thanks

Another possible cause is the fact that your computer is grossly underpowered for HD 1080P editing, with only 2 GB of ram you do not have much free ram available and your video card is insufficient, so your computer is in catchup mode all the time, as support for XP is fast running out, maybe time to upgrade your system.

Thanks Robert
Yes I have been considering an upgrade.
Maybe in the meantime I will try the clips on my other PC (a dedicated PC for my love of flight simulation) which has a 3.0ghz core 2, 4GB 1066 ram and a much faster video card with 1Gb memory.

I have 'solved' my problem.

I did a 'properties' on the file and noticed that the default player was Media Player Classic - Home Cinema.

When I changed that to Windows Media Player I do NOT see those jaggies.

Could someone please explain?

I had not noticed Media Player Classic before and have no idea where it came from having always used Windows Media Player in the past.

Hi John

Interesting that the default player causes a problem, I suppose in Clip Playback that the default player may be taking a part, something to think about.?

You did not say whether the problem was using Project Playback or Clip Playback

And you are comparing 25fps interlaced with 50P progressive.
Did you change the timeline options Settings - “enable 50/60 Editing”

Media Player Classic is supposed to be a good player that plays most video formats.
Have you installed K-Lite Codec Pack--- MPC will be installed as well.

Hi Trevor
I think that I have confused you.
I am not referring to playback within VS.
It's when I double click an unedited clip (ie file) straight from the camera.

Media Player Classic Home Cinema is a free utility that provides video playback.

I have NO idea where I got it from as I am used to Windows Media Player.

It seems that it cannot 'merge' interlaced frames correctly.

Hi John

Thanks for the conformation, Yes different players may produce better quality.
Media Player Classic is supposed to be pretty good.
By the way did you install Codec Pack k-Lite as that is one way the player will install to your pc.

If you do not intend to use that player personally I would uninstall it.
VLC Media Player is also a good player, I have used that for a while.

Working like you with HD video I am burning a hybrid disc, that’s HD video burned to the standard DVD, if I burn a AVCHD folder to the pc I have problems playing the menu, however Ken recommended DVD Fab Media Player which does play the folder menu and all. Not free but it works.
If you have a Bluray burner then you would be using that option, even so I need means of playing them on the pc. Yes we can play the movie, it’s the Menu that does not play, DVD Fab Media Player does that.

Hi Trevor,
Yes (according to a list of installed software) I have K-Lite Codec Pack 9.7.5 installed so that is where the player came from.
Media Player is not listed as an installed app so I will just change (I have already) the default player for video file types.
Thanks for the tip re VLC Media Player
