Custom resolution profile and aspect ratio

Post by BIY »

Hello,

I have used X4 for about two years and X6 for the past couple of months. I cannot figure out how the create more rendering options under Share -> Create Video File. For example, if I want to use the MPEG codec but a custom resolution. Often custom is greyed out and not selectable. In free software such as ffmpeg or Virtual Dub I can create video as any resolution, aspect ratio, or codec. VS options seem to be very limited to these prepackaged choices. For example, some people have described moving a .DLL to the Coral folder to get custom codecs under the Create Video -> custom option. I'd rather not have to always render in VS and then recodec in another software.

My biggest challenge is the new Instagram format. It is basically 640x640 webm format. But I can import MPEG h264 without issue. My goal is to setup a 1:1 640x640 profile so I don't always have to game and stretch titles to display properly in the final version.

Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks!

Hi BIY

and welcome to the forums…………

Do you mean something like this:-

WebM Files
24 bits, 640 x 640, 30 fps
Frame-based
22.050 KHz, 16 bits, Stereo

You can create your own templates using Settings – Make Movie Templates Manager

Choose New
Then webM as the file format
Give it a name
From the general tab choose User Defined frame size… 640 x 640

The template will be available from Share Create video File adjacent to the Custom option

Thanks I will look at the template manager.

However in the project window, I want to setup a 1:1 aspect ratio too. Right now I have to drag titles around or else they don't line up with the video (since choices are only 4:3 or 16:9). Right now the "project area" white box is wider than a 1:1 picture/video so it scrunches it in when exported to a video file. So for now, I create with the mpg 720 option and then crop the video through other software. It seems purchased software should be able to create the same processes as available in freeware.

Also if I want to export MPEG in 640x640, my custom options are greyed out. Do I have to install a new codec or is there a settings file I can edit to allow more resolution options?

Thanks!

Hi

First I have to say I have not use non standard frame sizes as I work with SD and HD type video, and any for the internet I would use 1280 x 720 16:9 ratio.

I do not know what effect changing the preview screen to square will have on the final output.

Press Alt + Enter to open Project Properties
Edit Format to Avi
Press Edit
Avi tab compression to “none”
General Tab –User Defined to 640 x 640

Saving to Mpeg—the option saves to standard definition sizes which use 720 x 576 for pal, generally used to burn a DVD

If you want 640 x 640 then you will have to use Quicktime, Div x
However I am not exactly sure which will allow user defined frame sizes?????
