picture frames

Post by makes me crazy »

I have an ancient version of Paint shop pro X. It worked fine for what I used it for-making note cards and simple stuff with photos. That was all fine until my computer died. OK I had the disc and install on new computer but now all the features do not seem to be working-ability to change color of the fill area etc.
Tried messing with that for a couple of days to see if I could get it to look like it did on the old computer-no such luck.

Now I download free trial of Paint shop Pro 6-great most of what I needed seem to be working and easy to do. But now I want to add picture frames and there is a very limited selection and when I tried to manipulate a previous version of a picture + frame+ texture only on the frame part-now the texture went all over the picture/space. What gives here? I am very technically challenged and wish I could get my old version to work right and I would be happy. The layers of the new version give me a real headache and don't know that I can figure that out now-didn't need to do that on the old version. I was used to the old way and want that back on the new computer.....

Help!

This is a little confusing to read.

You can't have the new and old together. What you can do is have X6 and use picture frames you've had previously, including tubes and other things.
You need to put your goodies in the appropriate folders and then do Files Locations in PSP by going to File, File Locations. Otherwise, PSP can't see anything.

There's a possibility there may be issues with PSPX and Windows 8.

Did you not save a backup of your old resources?
You could then point PSP to the old Picture Frames for easy access.

Ditto for anything else that might be missing in X6.

I understand that I can't have the old and the new together in one happy place.

Yes, I saved the old items and copied them over to new computer. Decided to try to improve the old pictures/projects with new program-that's when the issues with the texture going on the entire work space not just on the border, only a couple border options on the new program-so i couldn't add the same border style to remake the original one from scratch.

Again I am technically challenged-psp, layers, mixing, matching, figuring out how to get what I had with the old version with the new program options is more than I can possibly deal with-too hard to remember what of the million possible variations would get a similar version of the old-that I made a few years ago-my memory not "photographic".

Is there some very simple way to apply/add more border options with the new version?

Then how do I get the border texture to NOT go onto the picture too?

Thanks.

Thankfully, the old resources will work in X6 :-)

File>Preferences>File Locations, then search for the files you have saved and add them, they will show up in X6.

I use the 32-bit version of X6, so that all my 32-bit plugins show up (they don't in the 64-bit version).
Just thought I would add this information, although it's not relevant to your query.

Hehe,'technically challenged' isn't a huge problem :-)
Trial and error is always a good way to find out how things work :-)

I am not quite sure what you mean by 'border options'. Do you mean frames? As in Picture frames, some of which are borders.

Image>Picture Frame then select the frame you want to use.
See attached for settings:

Yes, I am talking about picture frames.
The icon for the trial program shows the 64 bit version is on my computer-
what do i need to do to downgrade? to the 32 bit-can i do that without loosing my days on the free trial?

i would be so happy if the 32 bit version would give me back all of the older style picture frames-the trial version only has a few of the square/rectangular styles.

i keep viewing the tutorials and can't seem to get all the right steps-i know the old version was also doing layers but did not seem soooooo complicated.
i just had to click on what i wanted added it to the photo and did not have to do all this renaming and saving new, pasting, copying and so on.

thanks i am just trying not to go totally insane with this new program.

Hehe, insanity can have it's own rewards!
I am sure you'll get to grips with PSP. It only took me a few years... ;-)

When you downloaded the trial, you should have got both versions, so there should be two PSPX6 icons on your desktop. One will say 32-bit, the other 64-bit.

I am not sure if the 32-bit version will contain all your old resources, so it's better to point PSP to them in File>Preferences>File Locations, then you can use the ones you have backed up.

Layers are a lot easier than they first appear, just think of them as sheets of clear plastic stacked on top of each other.

As for wanting to add what you want and not worrying about renaming, saving etc.
I am afraid all of it will only become familiar with a lot of practice.
Working on a copy of an image is good practice, just in case something goes wrong :-)

I have read over your post and noticed several things:

1. You say that your computer is 32bit. When you install X6 you are given the choice of installing 32bit or 64bit or both. You should have installed the 32bit. You may have to uninstall and reinstall the 32bit part. I think your trial period will continue.

2. The trial version has limited resources. After you purchase/upgrade you can download the rest of the resources. Then you will have more frames, picture tubes, brushes, etc.

3. When using the fill tool it will fill the whole area, unless you make a selection first. Make a selection of the area you want to change on the layer it’s on and then fill it with whatever you want. When making a frame and you have built it on different layers you could save it as a pspimage file for future changes then export as a picture frame after.

I have not had any problems using my old picture frames or creating/editing new ones.

Hi, again.
thanks for the info/ideas. I just got the full version and have not had time to experiment and see what I have to work within the program and what I can make it do.....still learning but had success getting text on top of a clip art picture that i modified the colors/fill turned out nice-2 layers and counting. maybe i can figure this out without completely loosing my mind.

i am a little confused by the suggestion of reclaiming/recapturing/reusing my old picture frames from the old program-would I have had to saved the frames separately in their own folder in order to copy them over to the new version-again reminding you that my abilities are very limited in understanding the entire process.

if i need to save the old frames separately-i still have the old version on my computer-how do i get them copied from the old program-saved-and into the new???

Thank you for the post about finding the frames in the older version and adding to the new one.
Yeah. I did this all by myself.

Now I am ready to try it with 3 layers. But not sure what the order should be.
item one-actual photo
item 2-picture frame
item 3-texture I want to apply to the plain area of the frame-is an oval style with plain area that can be changed with color and texture-which is what i did on the old version.

when i tried this on the new version texture went everywhere also covering the photo.

would i use the eraser function to remove texture from the photo without erasing the photo?
would photo be the bottom layer with the frame the middle layer with the texture on top or something else?

Some thoughts about your process:
  • When you used flood fill, what did you use for Match mode and tolerance? If your frame has a small colour range and you use Color for the match, you may be able to get the flood fill to change only the area inside your frame.
  • If your frame has the same width all the way around, both horizontal and vertical portions, select the third layer where you did the flood fill, then select Selections/All. This will show the marquee around the outside of the image. Next, go to Selections/Modify/Contract. Adjust the pixels to bring the marquee to the point inside frame that you want and delete. Go to Selections/None.
  • If your frame has a different width in the vertical portion than the horizontal, use the selections tool set for rectangle and draw a rectangle inside the frame (as above) and delete. Use Remove mode when you draw the rectangle. You can then do fine adjustments to the selection by using add and subtract modes.
I hope this helps.
