Unwanted start-up of Pro X5
Having been satisfied with a trial of Pro X5 I purchased a boxed version. It was installed and used several times with complete satisfaction. Only today I needed to look at some photographs full screen from my photo files and found that Pro X5 opened. I don't know how to stop Pro X5 opening every time I try to open a photograph. Can anybody help?

Hello Sputnik,
in the moment you install a program this setup will connect files with a special extension (sometimes several extensions) to this program. This is what happened to your files. The setup of PSP X5 connected the extension jpg to PSP X5. Now everytime you double click a jpg PSP will open.
You can change that if you click mouse right onto a jpg file and select the function 'open with'. Now select the last option 'select standard program' (or something like that). Then select the program you want to use as standard for jpg files and enable the checkbox below the list of programs (files type always open with the selected program or something like that).
Now it should work as expected.
( I hope my english was good enough.

Re: Unwanted start-up of Pro X5
Yes, it's not as difficult as it may seem, but you need to adjust your file settings and I can show you how here. I'll post screen shots too, this way if anyone else has this issue at least they can see what the 'deal' is.
So, from your comment, I'm assuming that from Windows Explorer or whatever else you use to view files, you just double-click the file to open in. If so, then you have two places you have to go to adjust settings. Next assumption, I believe the file you're opening is a jpg? So my info here will be based on (1) Windows 7, (2) Corel PSP (almost all versions), and (3) file type.
I recently did the exact same thing that I'm posting here. I like to use the Windows Photo Viewer to look at my pictures, rather than an editing program. So I changed the "opening" program for all jpg files, but left all others under PSP. Also, when you're in Windows Photo Viewer, you see a picture you want to edit, you can right-click and say Open with Corel PSP. Works great this way! So, here we go....
1. If you double-click on a file, for instance a jpg file, and it opens with PSP, then you need to open your PSP program, go to File > Preferences > File Format Associations to adjust this setting

2. Scroll down to find the file extension that you want to change the Opening Program with, in this case it's *.jpg. You will see that, in your current settings the Current Default is PSP (yes, my image shows PSP x6, but it's the same on X any...lol... Uncheck the file extension, then click on Save.

Now you can close your PSP Program if not needed open, then go to the next step.
3. Open up your Windows Explorer, folder, whatever you do to get to your file. Find the file that you want to view in Windows Photo Viewer (any jpg file will do).

4. Right-click on the file name, go down to the bottom and click on Properties.

5. You will see immediately the program used to open this file type and if you want to change that program, click on the Change button if you want to use something else to open the file.

6. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, that is usually where you will see the Windows Photo Viewer program at. Click on Windows Photo Viewer, then click on the OK button at the bottom. If you don't see Windows Photo Viewer, it's because it's not been used often, and you see at the very bottom "Other Programs", and to the bottom-right a drop-down arrow. Click on that arrow and it will open up to view other programs and Windows Photo Viewer should be in there. If it's not, drop me a note here!

7. Once you've clicked on that OK button, you are back to the properties window. You need to make sure it says that the program to open the file is Windows Photo Viewer. If it does, then click on the Apply button, after it's applied click on the OK button, and voila, you're done!

Deselecting the filetype from the PSP file associations is not necessary. Technically it doesn't do any good. PSP just open's Windows own file association dialogs and Windows does not like it when you orphan filetypes so it does not un-assign PSP from that filetype.
---
Fastest method that I know of, go through the Control Panel.
1) On the Windows taskbar - Start Menu -> Control Panel
2) Click Programs - > Default Programs -> Set your default Programs
3) On the left select "Windows Photo Viewer"
4) On the RIght select - "Choose Defaults for this program"
5) It will open the File associations dialog with all of the file-types Windows Photo Viewer is setup to be able to read. Find ".jpg" in the list and select the checkmark.
Windows will go ahead and re-assign the association on all JPG file types. This is also good because you can deal with all file types that Photo Viewer can handle in one dialog no back and forth and selecting Properties on files. Just do it all from this one dialog.

Wow, that is wickedly good! Thanks! This is why I like these forums, every time I come here I learn something new. This was way faster than what I had posted!!!LeviFiction wrote:Deselecting the filetype from the PSP file associations is not necessary. Technically it doesn't do any good. Re: Unwanted start-up of Pro X5
Another route . . . I've gone into Control Panel/Programs/Default Programs/Make a file type always open in a specific program. In the list that is presented I've found a mixture of PSP X6 and X5 as the specific program - see the attached. The list includes far more PSP files than are shown in the "set default programs" path. In some instances, say ".pspmask", I've tried to change the program to X6, to no avail. X6 does not appear in the list of suggested programs so I've used the browse option, selected the PSP X6 exe file and I still end up with X5. Any clues as to what is going on?
