Let me begin by admitting I'm an idiot.
That said, can anyone think of a reason my video plays perfectly when I have selected Clip, but not when I view it as a Project?
I have audio in both modes. But when I select project, I have only audio, and a very distorted video.
When I export as an MP4, I have perfect audio but distorted video.
My source video was shot on a Sony Handycam. Windows can play back the original video okay, until I run it through Video Studio Pro X6.
I've tried this a half dozen times, always with the same result -- good audio, video so dark it's barely there at all.
I've never used any video editing software before, so I'm probably doing something monumentally stupid.
Here's what I've been doing:
1) Import the video using Windows. Drag and Drop the video clip into my Timeline.
2) Select Clip, hit play. All is well.
3) Select Project, hit play, I have audio but impenetrable darkness on video.
4) Go back to Clip. Export as MP4. Resulting file has good audio but dark video.
5) Gnash teeth, try again.
Any advice is welcome at this point. Thank you for reading.

Well if you are an idiot you are in the right place, welcome to the forums
What you describe seems very strange indeed.
We need a bit more info, what version of Video Studio are you using and have you applied all service packs.
Right click the clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they?
Take a screen shot of that window, create an image and attach to your post.
Upload attachment tab at bottom of post.
update---sorry missed the reference to X6

Hi
Those properties look quite normal and as far as I know should not cause problems.
I assume your pc has its windows up to date, also that your graphics driver is the latest, recommended by ASUS.
Are you able to upload a sample, maybe to Sky Drive, 4shared or some other sharing site?
We can then test the video on our systems.
Video Studio------------have you applied the service pack SP1

Re: Video when viewing clip, none when viewing project
I shot a new video on the same camera, and followed the same procedures to get it into Video Studio.
This video behaves normally. No difference between Clip and Project playback. There's one other difference, too -- when I pause the new video, the paused screen is a still frame from the video. I can go a frame forward, or a frame back. That didn't work on the original video, even in Clip -- it was all black.
I'm exporting it now as an MP4. If it works, I'll write the original file off as corrupted somehow. Will let you know, and thanks for your help!
PS My drivers are all up to date. I will apply SP1 to Video Studio as soon as the export is done.

Re: Video when viewing clip, none when viewing project
Success! The new video is flawless, even after being rendered and saved as an MP4.
Either I did something heinous to the original video without realizing it (probable), or the ghosts rendered it unusable out of spite (not likely, though I like that explanation better).
Luckily I can reshoot the original video without too much trouble. I do appreciate the help! It;s good to know the clueless have a place to consult their technological superiors.
Again, thank you.

Re: Video when viewing clip, none when viewing project
Wow! After getting rid of the corrupted file, I've been able to combine and edit clips, insert opening and closing credits, and even use the overlay track.
I'm loving the program so far. It's the perfect tool to create video segments for my weekly blog, and the learning curve isn't as steep as I was afraid it would be.
I've been using Corel Paint Shop Pro to handle my image processing needs. Looks like Video Studio will be my go-to for video stuff!

Just try bringing the clip back in again from the camcorder and see if it works now.
