Proxy files

Post by erdna »

I use proxy files for my AVCHD editing. One of the options in the compression settings realates to " quality vs speed". Imo Proxy files are working files which content is not used for the final rendering. Cam somebody explain what the meaning/consequencie is of the quality vs speed choice?

I don't know for sure since I have never seen an explanation from Corel. However, it believe that if you choose speed over quality, it uses a format which is quick and easy to edit but where image quality in the preview screen is only pretty average. But if you choose quality, the program uses a format that lets you see something closer to the original HD footage, but this is slower to edit and respond to edits...

Thanks Ken, that's was what I was thinking too, but it turns out as far as I could verify, that there is no relation (at least w.r.t. spatial resolution) between the Preview quality and the Proxy quality settings. Maybe there is a difference in the temporal resolution and a related clip cutting temporal precision.

I did some further testing on proxy file generation. The whole setting thing, appart from enable or disable proxi file generation, seems meaningless to me. Auto or manual, template choice, high or low resolution setting in the options pannel (manual), codec choce (DV/DVD), speed vs quality,... nothing seems to have any influence on the proxy generation speed, nor on the rest of the editing process. Why is it still there?
