Cannot see a picture when opening file
I somehow managed to change the settings so that now when I open a file, I can't see the picture I want to edit. I get a black box with vertical colored lines through it. How do I get rid of this, or get back to the system defaults?

Fastest way to system defaults. Close the program. Then while holding the Shift key double click on the program icon to open it up. It'll ask if you want to reset to factory defaults. This will reset all preferences and customization.
It's always recommended that once you get PSP the way you like it that you save out the workspace file in case you need to reset your preferences.

Something else you might try. Have you touched the Color Management options at all? Sometimes choosing the wrong colorspace or changing the color management options (profiles, rendering intents, proofing versus matching, etc.) will result in errors like this.
