Pro X6 Chromakey upgrade?

Post by Polkat »

Using Video Studio Pro X6. Is there a plug-in or an upgrade of any kind to improve the chroma key performance? It has not black or white control, and no matte setting (to see what you are doing!). I use Robuskey in Premiere which is great, but there's no version for Corel. Anyone? Thanks!

I am not quite sure what your seeing, but in my X6 I see the effect in the preview window immediately when I have clicked "Apply Overlay Options" - then you can choose any colour at all as the overlay mask from black or white through a million colours.

my Chroma key works perfectly as it is - what exactly is the problem with yours ?

Oh, it works okay, for what it does, but control is quite low compared to others I've used, and I'm a retired professional editor who knows this stuff. The eye dropper is not the problem. A good chromakey program will have adjustments for spill, green (or blue) averaging, with adjustments for the white and black intensity in the matte setting, as well as bluring and edge cutting (or whatever they call it these days). In fact, Corel has no matte setting,-which is of major importantance for getting a high quality key without color bleed through in body lines, hair, smoke, water, etc. In fact, other then a thinly working key color adjustment (not the eye dropper), Corel really has no chromakey adjustments to speak of, just a get what you see result.

Don't get me wrong! Corel Videostudio Pro is a nice little intermediate editor that works well in most operations. But very editor has it's strong and weak areas. I guess chromakey is Corel's.

I know that NewBlue has what they call Chroma Key Pro as one of their filters in their Video Essentials VI pack. It has the sort of controls you mention and does a great job, once you get the hang of it. It installs as part of the Video Studio FX filters. But unfortunately, the Essentials packs cost more than VS itself, unless you find them advertising special offers.

NewBlue is now selling their products unbundled. The Chroma Key Pro tool is available for ~$30.
