File Format Mismatch - JPG only

Post by Kela1961 »

Hello. I used to own Ulead Video X2 and after consulting many times with Ken Berry I was successful in some important projects. I now have purchased VideoStudio X6 with the hopes of it performing well right out of the box. No such luck. I have installed in on my HP work laptop thinking it's much more powerful than my home PC, but in trying to create my first project, I am not able to simply import a jpg to do a slide show with music. It gives the error "Unable to open file [xxx....\xxxx\...jpg]. ! File format mismatch [16803:1:3]"

I have of course scoured the web and have seen some other users struggling with the same error. So far all I've seen is that it may be the video card or Update to the Graphics board driver. I'm not too techy though I work at HP...and am really nervous about altering any updates on my work laptop. I haven't yet tried any updates or patches thinking that if I just got this, shouldn't it be the latest? I was successful in importing video from an iPhone and I've been successful with mp3 audio files as well, but the jpg's just aren't working. I even tried converting the jpg files to pdf format - but that's not supported I see as an importable file.

I have also noted that if I try to view the sample pictures from the library, it tells me "Original file [C:\program files\corel\corel videostudio pro X4\samples\image\xxxxxJPG] doesn't exist. I am able to view the sample video clips. But when looking at where Corel was saved on my system, it didn't default to "Program Files" which I thought is what it stated upon installation, but it put it in "Program Files (x86)" So I don't even know if I can relink to fix that. Even if I do, that doesn't solve my jpg fundamental problem. I hate to sound like a whiner, but I'm really discouraged and hope the fix is easy after spending so much for a reliable Video SW program. My wife's best friend passed away and I've promised a tribute slide show for her wake to be completed in the next 2 weeks. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help! Ken

Hi Ken

And welcome to the forums

What you describe looks very familiar….

I had a lot of problems with a Levovo laptop, turned out to be the graphics driver, I fixed by using Windows updates.

Please view my web page regarding my problem.

If the errors look similar to what you are getting then it is probably the graphics driver

The page does not mention importing my own images, but that was also an issue, as you also describe

... it didn't default to "Program Files" which I thought is what it stated upon installation, but it put it in "Program Files (x86)"
The latter is in fact the correct destination. VS X6 is not a 64 bit program, and all non-64 bit programs on a 64 bit computer are stored in "Program Files (x86)". So don't worry about that one.

Next, since you are -- like me -- working on a HP laptop, have you checked in the HP Support Assistant which, on mine at least, is located either on the desktop itself or in the HP icon fixed on the task bar. That has a module in it which checks for, and offers, updates of various features on your computer, so that too is one less thing for you to worry about! Check that, and if it offers any updates, accept that and you will know that your computer is up to date...

Finally, the jpeg problem... It could in fact be your graphics card requiring an update, though it seems strange to me that you can load everything else except perhaps the most common type of image format. (EDIT: I see that lata has beaten me to the punch, so please try out his suggestion before you do anything else.) One thing you could try, instead of converting them to PDF, is to use another image format such as .bmp or .tif or .png. You could even try saving them as .jpg but with a different name. If that works, then that solves your immediate timing problem with the slideshow, though it leaves the underlying mystery of why it is happening in the first place.

In that regard I am wondering if there is any link with a similar problem reported recently in our PaintShop Pro forum. There a jpeg caused PSP to crash. I used the method of saving it to another format, which worked. But another of our users found that the underlying problem lay in the amount of information contained in the photos EXIF information. Apparently, PSP can only accept information which is no more than 255 characters long, and in this case the info was longer and PSP crashed in response. By deleting the info, the photo loaded with no problems. So that is another possibility, namely that VS has a similar limitation with jpegs. Have a look at that thread at http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 06#p276006

wow....first let me just say that I'm really impressed that on a Sunday (no less), that I get awesome advice so quickly. I pinged my tech buddy at HP and he reviewed all of your comments and suggested I delete and reinstall the graphics card....and wonder of wonders...it worked!!! I'm on my way...just hope all else goes smoothly as well - thanks so much!!
