Had old Canon FS406 non-HD, for which VS X4 worked fine. The camera failed and I have bought a Canon HF R406 HD camcorder. SDHC 16GB card, initiallised. Taken test clips in MP4 24 Mbps mode, plus photos. These play back normally in the camera.
Behaviour when I connect camera to computer using supplied USB cable is odd. With camera in Playback mode, I get the sound signal for a new connection in the computer, and the camera screen shows the USB symbol along the top, but not the usual message about "not disconnecting until computer gives OK". Also, Windows Explorer then sees the camera and lists the clip and photo files, but the camera isn't listed in "Safely remove hardware and eject" mode.
However, when I go to Capture in VS X4 and click on Import from Digital Media, I get the usual file structure hierarchy with boxes to tick, but the camera/SD card is not listed. Hence I am unable to capture the clips for editing and sharing.
I would be very grateful for any advice on how I might sort this one out. Many thanks.

The problem is that you are trying to use your new camera in the same old fashioned way you used the old one - you do not "Capture" with modern SD card cameras.
Do not use 'import from Digital Media" instead just use 'Import Video' and select those videos you can see on the SD and click 'open' and the videos will appear in VS
OR - with the camera plugged in open Windows Explorer and simply drag and drop the files from the Sd card into a suitable folder on your HDD
OR - insert the SD card into a card reader - many PC's have them integral now - and again drag and drop from card to HDD.
TheSD card is just an external drive for your computer - use it just as you would a USB drive - no need to actually 'capture'

Brian, Many thanks for that. Can't get to VS until tomorrow, but sure will now be OK. I've got a bit out of date. Michael

All OK. Haven't spotted an "Import video" option on my VS X4, but used Windows Explorer to transfer from SD card to folder on HDD. Then dragged from there into VS X4 Library and/or Timeline. Not done any editing yet - next step. Hope that hasn't changed too much! Very many thanks again.

Re: VS X4 can't "see" new Canon camcorder
AH - sorry Michael - led you astray a little with my incorrect nomenclature.
In fact it looks as though I was not having a very good day when I wrote the post above - since using the Import/Insert options will NOT transfer the actual video from camcorder to hard disk - they will show the clips in VideoStudio but the actual videos will still be on the SD Card - with just a link from VS to them.
Now that you have the videos on your hard drive - lets see if I can get the next bit right.
It is "Import Media Files" if you use the folder in the library to add clips to your library .
It is RIGHT click over the timeline and "INSERT Video files" to put them straight in the timeline.
see options below
