PSP X6 crashes with BEX, not usable anymore

Post by Trilliana »

Hi,

I am at a loss and completely frustrated. After almost perfectly working about 1 month long, PSP X6 now crashes in both versions, 32 and 64 bit, right after start. It displays the manager with the pictures from the folder used last time, then the HD is turning some 5-8 seconds more, and then comes the crash.

System: Win 7 64-bit SP1 german

Problem Event: BEX
Module: MSVCR90.DLL
Version: 9.0.30729.6161

It did work until a week ago, when I last time used it before today, since then the only software installed were updates for Adobe Reader and Flash, and the usual Windows defender signatures update, nothing else was changed on the system.

Reinstalling Visual C++ 2008 SP1 32-/64-bit (above DLL seems to be part of it) didn't help, uninstalling and re-installing PSP X6 neither, nor playing around with the DEP settings, as advised by some MS MVPs on the net. PSP X4, still on my machine, does work.

So it comes down to having a really good software which I paid for and which I really got to love, and not being able to use it at all.

Most likely one of those updates you did is causing your problems.

What is BEX?

It's a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime error.

Microsoft's own article lists it as
Indicates a buffer overflow (/GS) or DEP exception (BEX64 indicates a buffer overflow (/GS) or DEP exception on 64-bit versions of Windows)
[Link]

So either there is an overflow issue that Corel has not accounted for. Or DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is blocking the running of the program.

Since you've added PSP as an exception to the list we can assume it's not DEP. Are you using Plugins? Technically if DEP was the issue even plugins wouldn't matter after putting PSP into the exception list but I have to ask.

If you have plugins installed, try moving them away so PSP doesn't find them and see if that helps.

Yes, I have plugins. I have the Ultimate edition, so there is Perfectlyclear, then the Nik from X4 Ultimate, and several others. I'll try uninstalling resp. moving them, however they worked all right when PSP worked. It's strange that PSP was working for about a month before crashing. And because I can't believe the Adobe updates can cause that much trouble, I'll try to find out what else is changed on the PC. There was the usual lot of Office/Win security updates I guess, I might try uninstalling them one by one and see what happens. But security updates are necessary... :?

Hi,

I cannot believe it myself, but the problem seems to be solved. It wasn't the MS DLL, neither plugins nor software updates, but seemingly the renaming of the image files in the last used folder.

Here's what I tried, to no avail:
- plugin folder renamed, plus deleted all plugin folders in the registry under FileLocation, so the newly installed PSP didn't found any
- compared MSVCR90.DLL with another Win installation (parallel on my machine), where a test version of PSP does work (the DLL are identical)

At last I thought I'll change the last used folder before I start uninstalling the ca. 2 dozen Win/Office updates. I remembered there is a post in the forum saying PSP crashes on a specific JPG. So I changed the LastSelectFolder (under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Corel\PaintShop Pro\X6\General\Organizer) in the registry to point to an empty folder. And that did it, PSP started and stayed started! Probably one could also simply rename the last used folder. I navigated to a folder with images and could open them without error.

The problem is either some image file in the last used folder or the renaming of the files in that folder outside PSP, I'll have to test that, if I navigate to that folder PSP crashes again.

I gather from what you have said that you have ben using "Manage" mode. I seem to recall that somewhere els they discovered that renaming a file / folder outside PSP stuffed up the Manage search for last used . I do not use Manage at all and only start in Edit mode, so it does not search for a last used folder there to try and load some thumbnails I get no problems. (keeping it simple)
Congratulations on your discoveries. Perhaps another bug that Corel needs to address 'if cant find last used directory don't hang '

Yes, I am using the Manage mode, it's easier to select the image to work with. But the renaming wasn't the culprit, please see my other thread

Thank you, it did cost me enough time and nerves :? And at least this point doesn't need to be addressed (there are enough other problems). To get PSP out of the crashing I renamed that last used folder, and the PSP manager landed on "Computer" (or "My Computer" or whatever) - without hanging or crashing.
