MediaStudio Pro 8.0

Post by Terry Stetler »

First let me make it clear that Ulead has given me a partial release from my NDA (non-disclosure agreement) regarding MediaStudio Pro 8.0.

The contents of this post are therefore not speculation, though the images herein show user interface details that may change before release.

Now that we have all of that out of the way, here's a very partial list of MSPro 8's new features:

Single Track editing:

No more Va/Fx/Vb tracks. Transitions can now be placed on any track. Transitions are applied by overlapping adjacent clips on the same timeline. In the image below the yellow portion is the transition;

Image

Overlays:

Overlays can now be placed on any track, just like transitions, and you can apply transitions between them.

Multiple Timelines:

You start out with the Main Timeline, but can add more at any time. These timelines can be used to load in multiple projects at once or they can be used as Nested Timelines.

Nested Timelines:

Nested timelines can each contain a portion (or chapter) of a given project with the whole being assembled on the Main Timeline. This makes them work like a video outliner.

Virtual Clips:

Nested timelines are accomplished using Virtual Clips. A Virtual Clip appears to be an ordinary clip, but in reality they contain all the contents of its target timeline including other Virtual Clips.

In the transition image above the second clip is a Virtual Clip. Doubleclicking on it opens its target timeline revealing its contents;

Needless to say this opens up a lot of possibilities.

Enhanced display engine:

MSPro8 also has an enhanced display engine which ensures smooth zooming, scrolling and scrubbing.

That's all I can say for now, but as you can see things are changing in major ways. More details will be forthcoming in a few days.

What Terry has shown is really only the tip of the iceberg. My list of new ideas that have been incorporated would cover 3 or 4 A4 sheet of 10 point typing!

That having been said, I would like to issue a word of warning. This very partial info release does NOT mean that the release is imminent. My guess is that we still have many weeks of work before even the first release candidate is ready for testing. We are seeing weekly beta versions, each one just a little nearer the target. So, please, do not ask us how long it will be. No one knows at this time.

Not really. As Brian has intimated developing and testing a monster like this just takes time. Patience grasshopper :D :D

The longer it takes...The more we can fix the bugs... and the better the release build will be. As Terry said be patient it will be well woth the wait.

Thanks Terry :)
I d/l MSP 7 trial the other day, was seriously considering purchasing it. I had read some here about Ulead's pattern of releasing new upgrades, and seen that there was beta testing of MSP8.
Now after you dangled the carrot, I'm just going to wait for version 8. It looks real sweet so far...

Terry,
If Ulead isn't paying you to be the lead "pitchman" for MSP8, they should be. I think you have everyone salivating waiting for the program.

I'm waiting with baited breath! :D

Can anyone say whether or not it will be at a reasonable pricepoint i.e. relatively close to the current pricing model?

Lastly, can anyone say whether or not it will support HDV natively sans plug-in?

I'm saving all my pennies for this release as this would be my first venture into a 'professional' video editor. I currently use VideoStudio.

Thanks.

Pricing is up to the marketing guys, but my guess is that Ulead will follow the usual discount practices for existing users of MSPro and VideoStudio.

Sorry, that's still-under-NDA turf. More info will be coming soon though, so watch for new posts by myself and others participating in the beta.

Terry,
No more Va/Fx/Vb tracks.
???
At all? It was so usefull... Is there a possibility to split any track to Va/Fx/Vb

Second question: Is there possible to unite previously splitted video and audio tracks after separate editing of the sound track?

No more Va/Fx/Vb tracks, at all. Instead, you have a MUCH more flexible system where V1 (or V2, V3, V4 ... V99) becomes its own Va AND Vb with automatic transitions between overlapping tracks. It's great and doesn't require much getting used to.

Devil is exactly correct. It took me all of 30 seconds to get used to the change, then another 10 seconds to realize this also brings into play the ability to use real transitions between overlays and not just crossfades faked in the Overlay Options.

Look at it this way: instead of using 3 tracks to do a simple transition you just use ONE. In order to do one of those fake overlay transitions it took 2 tracks and now it takes ONE.

The uppance: if both of the above sequences were in an MSPro 7 project it would take up 5 whole tracks instead of the 2 it takes up in MSPro 8. That saves a whole lot of timeline real estate that can be used for other things we can't yet talk about :D

Yes, the A/B paradigm is gone forever, but the changeover isn't nearly as painful as you're imagining.

The "one-track-with-crossfade" is essentially the same as Adobe Premiere is now using. I have the Elements version, I admit I prefer the single-track-with-effect concept, it is very easy to get used to. Other than this, Premiere is really not a very nice software, doing silly things with frame rates and all sorts of unexpected things. Overall I prefer my MSP7. Can't wait till I get MSP8, it really looks awesome. If it works as well as MSP7, with the improved editing facilities, it's a killer app. (A premiere-killer? )
Cheers,
Arnie.
