Tip needed for cataloging raw+jpeg photos

Post by achab »

Hi to all.
I'm new in this forum and I'm learning to use AfterShot. After reading this book I realized the importance of having a well-organized archive. I can not find the photos taken over the years ...

I read all the user manual, and search long through the forum, but I can not figure out how to handle this case.
Usually I shot in RAW+JPEG mode (so I have RAW for me and JPEG to give to my girlfriend who doesn't want to wait to view the photos).
So, over the years, I've always cataloged files in the file system with a simple folder convention (in the format yyyymmdd - location and event), and each folder has a sub-folder \raw.
How do I categorize images in AfterShot? In the future I could only shoot in RAW for simplicity, but now I am forced to delete all camera JPEG files, or ignore them in the catalog import process? What a mess...
I would like AfterShot considered the two files photo.dng and photo.jpeg as the same image ... or recognize that photo.jpeg is a derivative version of photo.dng.
Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Nicola

Unfortunately, the catalog is not really suited to serious image management.
And currently there is no way to associate derived images in an efficient way.

My images sit in a similar structure of yours, where the raw fies form the root node of a session and various JPGs and TIFFs reside in subdirectories according to purpose.

I strongly suggest looking at a real DAM like iMatch to manage the images.

Agreed. One advantage of ASP is that you are able to use it in file system mode, unlike LR or C1, which makes it easier to do this.

Hello Nicola

Same situation for me, so please tell me if you find a good solution :D (finding other software is kind of hard because for me it needs to run on Windows AND Linux)

What you can do in ASP:
- Use metadata browser, be sure to set the "Link with Catalog"
- Browse "Image Info" (not sure how it's captioned in english) -> "File Type" and select "RAW"
This way you simply ignore the JPEG images by filtering them out, but you still can keep them in your file system and catalog.
If you need to filter by more criteria in the metadata browser, just hit the refine button.

Edit: By the way: take care your catalog doesn't grow too big or use a REALLY fast harddisk/SSD. Rather make various catalogs, you can search in all of them at the same time if needed.

Thank you afx.
This means that if in the past I have already created manually derivative versions, there is no way to couple with the original files? (the original is often raw, but they are also to jpeg unimportant photos)

Thank you tylmaster. I'll try this solution.

Now I'm in the situation that I'm worried about go out and shoot, for fear that new photos will add even more entropy to my disorganized archive.
