PSP X6 Can't set file association

Post by Dizzie »

Just installed PSP X6 on windows 8 64 bit. When in file explorer, I click on pspimage file and it opens in X6 64 bit. I want it to open in 32 bit. I did the right click Open With/Choose default program trick to no avail. I also did the File/Preferences/File Format associations and selected PSP X6 32-bit but it still opens it in the 64 bit version.
Do I need to uninstall PSP and install it again minus the 64 bit version to get it to work?
I don't use the 64 bit version much cause my plugins are 32 bit.

In the program under 'File/Preferences/File format Associations'.

Thanks, but as I said, " I also did the File/Preferences/File Format associations and selected PSP X6 32-bit but it still opens it in the 64 bit version."

Did you also unselect all in the 64 bit version?
The 64 bit version is in 'Program Files' not in 'Program Files (x86)'

I found the file extensions in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations where it is set to PSP X6 64 bit...when I change the program and go to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X6 and select Corel PaintShop Pro.exe it refreshes the list and chooses Corel Paintshop Pro X5.
I guess I'll have to uninstall X5..??

I had this.

Simply the X6 installer fails to create the association.

maybe it's because of X5, maybe it's because of installing the 64&32bit versions.

who knows. but it's funny.

You just have to right click a .pspimage file and select open with... choose default program... make sure 'always use this program' is checked and select X6

As I said, "I did the right click Open With/Choose default program trick to no avail." It continues to use 64 bit to open it with.

Then it's time to go to the Control Panel. I've tested this on my system and it seems to work.

Open your Windows start menu -> Control Panel -> Programs -> Default Programs

You can then either select "Set your default programs" or "Associate a file type or protocol with a program"

1) Set your default Programs
  • 1) Select PaintShop Pro 32-bit from the list
    2) Select - > Choose defaults for this program
3)Find all formats you want associated with it and hit "Save"
2) Associate a file type or protocol with a pogram
  • Find the format you want to assign
Select "Change Program" button at the top
    Browse to the file location
If neither of those work then try this workaround.

With the first method, set the default program as as another program like WIndows Photo Viewer. Then change it back to point to the 32-bit version of PSP.

I've done 2nd method at least 10 times to no avail
the 1st method doesn't work because there are no .pspimage or.psp file extensions in the list.....I give up

File associations problems continue with the released PSP X6 purchased 10 days ago & all up to date.

Under Windows 7 I still have X5 installed, since I am not sure I X6 has any benefits for me, with that sad no 64-bit TWAIN issue.

Just now tried to set the file association to bring up X6 instead of X5. Can't do it!

My Windows control panel default programs shows X6 64-bit as default, and in X6-64 I said open/associate with all appropriate file types.

But all pspimage files still open in X5! At least it seems X6 created files open fine in X5... :-) Maybe all will magically work if I reboot my system??? Or not...

And of course the old PSP thumbnail demon is back at work in a slightly different way: when I try to open a file from within PSP X6, many of the thumbnails are just dumb icons! Windows explorer seems to see them all just fine however.

I've had a similar problem. I'm able to set some associations while with other items, even though I select X6 for association, X5 persists as the program. No rhyme or reason. I should try changing X5 association to X4 and then see if I can go from there to X6 - but that's too much trouble. Perhaps to satisfy curiosity.

If I use File/open I get a list with dumb icons, but as I indicated in another post, I don't get thumbnails for any picture files in Explorer. I do get a preview when I click on a file.

So I decided to experiment some more with association. The last time I did this was probably a couple of months ago and at that time there were a lot of X5 associations that seemed to not want to change. I went in to Control Panel/Programs/Default Programs/Set Association - I could not find any associations for X5! It appears that over time the associations were changed with no intervention on my part - or what I had done earlier finally took. And I was ble to change "Unknown application" to X6 where I wanted to.
