Video Studio X4 - Insert image without resizing

Post by debi2 »

Hello
This is my very first time on this forum, have found it because cannot resolve problem with inserting images.
I am using version X4 and don't see option turning off image resizing.
The problem appears when I want to insert image larger than a video size (i.e. 640x480). Video Studio put image to the video layer with resolution fitted to video size. I want it to put image with it's original size.
For example I want to insert image with the resolution of 1920x1080 to the video 640x480. As a result I see on the movie still image resized to the smaller resolution (640x480) - it can be itted to the video or can mainain original aspect ratio but it has smaller resolution! Then when I wan to show a fragment of the image (let it be a 640x480 crop of the full image 1920x1080) Video Studio is resampling 1920x1080 image to the smaler resolution 640x480 and then the only way to show cropped image is to enlarge this smaller one. When it is enlarged lets say to 120% is OK, but I need to enlarge it to 300-350%. It looks horrible.
Help please!

Put your image in the overlay track - not the top video track - then click on it - in the preview screen RIGHT click on the image and choose "Original Size" the image will show full size and can be moved about using the mouse cursor.

If you need to have a space in the top video track just put any colour block there and set it to the same duration as the image - it will not show in your final video.

Not working. Result is the same - image has original size but after two resizing - first lowering resolution then enlarging...

I feel I am not understanding what it is you actually want to do - you originally asked how to put an image into your project at full size - which I explained how to do - now you say it doesn't work because you are resizing it.

If you are choosing 640 x 480 as your working size then you are putting an image bigger than that into a video then it only has two options - one is to resize to that resolution - and the other is to display just a 640 x 480 part of your 1920 x 1080 image - it is not physically possible to display and image of 1920x1080 in an 640x480 window without scaling it down.

As I said perhaps I am not understanding what you are trying to do - I leave it at that and hope someone else will come along to help you

Thx anyway for you support.
I want to put image and animate it from full size view to small fragment - this is why I need so big enlargements.
In this method you have described when video show small fragment of the image it can be seen only big pixels - I need to see details.
Image in the movie starts from full size view (here it can be in reduced resolution) and in few seconds it is zooming to small fragment (approx 10-20% of the frame - thus makes approx 300-400%).
Is it possible to do in X4? Any ideas?

Have you tried applying the "Video Pan and Zoom" filter found in the FX window of Video Studio? That allows you to move over a photo (or video) and zoom in to a particular part of it...

Thank you for suggestion but it isn't what I really need. Final effect is similar - when in large zoom there are only big pixels instead of more details visible....

If your image is 640x480 then if you blow it up it will of course become pixelated. There is no way around that. Once your 1920x1080 image is added to your project it will become 640x480 - the original resolution is lost.

Very bad news... It seems that there is no possibility to add high resolution picture to the project...
Or maybe there is a 3rd party filter which allow this?

There is no "magic" 3rd party filter that will do what you want since it is simply not possible.

If you want to retain some of your high resolution then you will have to create a HiDef project and not a standard video project. But even with a Hidef project you will get pixelation if you zoom in too much.

There is no magic necessary, I thought that images can be inserted witout resizing into the project and then, when user will accept how the inserted image have to look like, image will be resized to the project's size...
Anyway thanks... Will try your method with size of the project.

Hi

What are you trying to make? a video for the internet or a standard definition DVD.
Your output video format will ultimately set the video frame size.

For HD a max of 1920 x 1080 is used as the full size.

HiDef Projects
Video Studio defaults to using SD project properties (720 x 576 for pal), as a workround you can change the project properties to use 1920 x 1080 frame size, this may improve the quality you see on screen.

Go to Settings – Project Properties (Alt + Enter)
Select Microsoft AVI file for the Edit file Format
Edit button
AVI tab Compression - None
General tab—user define Frame Size to 1920 x 1080 (widescreen 16:9 ratio)
Frame type, I would use Frame based for images.
Set the frame rate to match your standards Pal 25 or NTCS 29.97

To identify the actual frame area go to F6 Preferences and change the background colour from black, any colour of your choice, You may be best changing back to black before rendering the project.

Top Video Track
Inserting images to the top timeline will “fit to screen” but may create a border if image are not 16:9 ratio. An option to resize is available, double click the image will open the options panel, attributes tab, distort clip, (resize handles show on the image preview screen”.

Overlay Track
Inserting images to the overlay track will display as a smaller image, drag the yellow corners to re-size and retain the aspect ratio. Make sure the cursed changes to a double arrow. Position the image on screen.

Picture in Picture filter
Quite a powerful tool giving many animation options. (FX Filter library.)

Hope this helps?
