Hidden Gems (WHY?) - A letter to management

Post by Tesselator »

I use and critique a lot of RAW editors, paint programs, and CG applications and I'm here wondering why AfterShot Pro is being so neglected by the powers in Corel's promotion and evangelism departments. Except for the loyal followers who have been following Bibble Labs all along no one has even heard of "AfterShot Pro". Now, why is that do you suppose?

ASP stacks up very nicely against the likes of CaptureOne DxO, LightRoom, Aperture, and others of similar ilk. As a professional grade RAW processor it eats paint-centric applications like PSP, Gimp, Pixelmator, and others for lunch with room left over for beverages at that.

Seriously, ASP should be ranking as the #2 RAW processor (and #1 on some platforms) among all contenders in general terms. In terms of speed alone nothing else touches it in my extensive tests. Yet, no popular sites even list it in their top-ten and that has everything to do with Corel's marketing department and them alone! Where are the ad campaigns? Where are the promotional photo contests? Where is your forum evangelist(s)? What is Corel not doing that no one has even heard of ASP except long-time BP users?

Corel seems to be messing up a really good thing here and while I have no idea about the acquisition agreements if I were the ASP lead dev I'd be pretty pissed and I don't mean having jollies at the local ozzy pub either. The Corel haphazard approach even shows here in their own forums where shills and evangelists for other apps are allowed to start threads with titles and messages like: ASP 1.2 - goodbye, I have never loved you. Get a grip men, grow a pair and do the right thing. Global warming can't be so harsh in your area as to be immobilizing you all to this extent. Don't let this gem remain hidden! Nurture it, promote it, fund it, and grow it. Corel has a true wonder here and is letting down the photographic world as well as clipping their own wings by not doing right by it.

UG!

It used to be a matter of taste, but IQ leapfrogged with the engines LR4 and Photo Ninja.
So there is some catching up to be done.

ACK!

Well, the original dev team was fired in summer last year. And only after some management change inside Corel at the end of the first quarter this year finally the support of new cams showed up this summer (with hired help from the old lead developer, which just shows that the old team was fired before a new team was trained on the code) and there are some indications of progress, but at glacial speed (for those that are used to the old Bibble Labs response times).
Nurture it, promote it, fund it, and grow it. Corel has a true wonder here and is letting down the photographic world as well as clipping their own wings by not doing right by it.
Amen!

Ah, OK, I see - it wasn't a clean transition and the internal bumps so to speak are just getting ironed out. OK, that explains a lot! Thanks for that! It's a bummer that the original "bump" was ironed tho. 8)

You don't need to ACK however - while there are a few tid-bits MIA, the core app is extremely good and competes well. Don't sell it short for sure bother. There's probably a bunch of noisy dissatisfied users as a result of the ironing process but it's not useful to overly mind the spoiled. We went thru the same thing at NewTek some years back.

Anyway, nice to meet you afx, I hope to read more from you and the other good members of this community as the product and marketing shift into gear.

Me thinks you misunderstand the meaning of ACK ;-)
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ack, the first is usually used in IT environments.

Oh, ACK as used in like, the Punter protocol or something. Heh. :)

Xmodem baby, yeah! :) Thanks for the clarification!

BTW, I posted a mini-review at 8 different photo sires to see what the response was prior to starting this thread.

Only the 1st two links there saw much traction. These 8 might be interesting to keep tabs on or read through - for sure if you see errors let me know. Also if you know the answers to any of the questions being asked we'd love to have you in! For example one person was very interested in Medium Format Digital Back support. Do you know if there are any plans along those lines for future releases of ASP?
