Sorry for the lack of info.

Test.mp4 is the original file.

Test2.mp4 is the rendering of a portion of the original file that I clipped out. I used "Same As" to render it. It does not include anything from the very beginning. This file does not play correctly for me.

Ken,

Not sure if you've done this but could you clip out a portion of the test.mp4 file, say 20 seconds out of the middle, and render it using "Same as". As long as it does not include the very beginning of test.mp4. Then see if it plays correctly for you? Thanks!

From what you're described, it appears to me that my rendered file is corrupt which makes sense as it does not play correctly. At this point, I would like to see if it's an issue with my hardware/software.

As requested, I clipped out a 30 second segment from around the middle of test.mp4. With only that segment in the X6 timeline, I rendered Same As First Clip. As expected, SmartRender made the render very fast. However, when it got to 100%, the little circling 'wait' icon stayed on screen for over a minute. But when it disappeared, the new clip played perfectly.

FWIW, the new clip also played perfectly in a number of other software players: VLC, DVDFab Media Player and Windows Media Player.

Excellent. Thanks for that. So now the question is what do I do next?

I had the trial version initially installed on my laptop. I then purchased the full version but all I did was enter the activation code. No further download was needed. I also have the current updates installed.

Should I do an uninstall and then a fresh install?

Well, I can't really think of much else to do. As I implied above, some patience is needed to produce a viable video. There were to me somewhat inexplicable delays in producing the final videos which I don't get from my own GoPro footage or indeed with other formats. With that little circling icon running, if you click on the screen in order to try to hurry things up, you get a 'Not responding' response. So you could be aborting too early. I have found over the years that with successive versions of VS, if I sit and wait a while, things more often than not work out -- as they did in this case -- without closing the program down. So if that somehow parallels your own workflow, you might want to try it.

Otherwise, yes, I guess the first thing I would do would be a clean reinstall...

Hi
Well I also tried cutting a 20 second sample, this render quickly but just produced black frames when played back. Not good at all
I had earlier rendered the full clip which was successful, a duplicate copy (using Same as First Clip of course)
Just repeated the above, the file plays the same as original, with pauses till I create the smart proxy that is.

I really am struggling reading this video file (test.mp4)
I know that after creating Smart Proxy files that Project playback is ok.

I have no idea why my Video Studio pc does not play these files and struggles to edit them. Nor why Kens setup has no problems, I can only assume Ken has a codec installed that I do not.

It would seem that you and I are seeing the same problems.
Can you try creating a Smart Proxy file of “test.mp4” just to see if Project Playback improves for you. It did take a very long time to create.

However I do not know if you will be able to edit as cutting the clip does not render correctly, at least not for me.

Tried that. No change.

I also removed VS X6 in it's entirety including any remaining entries in the registry. Then I did a fresh download and install. Still having the same issue. I'm going to install on my wife's laptop now and see how that works.

Did you ever find a solution to your clip issue? I have the same problem. GoPro3 vids edited trying to "Smart Render" either catching on first few frames or not rendering anything but vertical lines. I have tried 3 different computers, and even bought a new laptop with dedicated graphics thinking that would be the answer. Surprisingly not!

No but I did install on my wife's laptop running Win 7 and it works fine. I've done everything I can think of to fix this issue on my laptop short of reinstalling the operating system.

Our laptops are virtually identical except hers has a larger screen, full keyboard and Blu-ray.
