Paintshop Pro X6 64 bit issue with Scanner

Post by lmod »

PSP X6 64 bit issue with Epson V700 Scanner.

I hope this may help others who are having scanner issues with PSP X6

Firstly, I confirmed that my scanner installation, including the Epson scanning software is all in order, as PSP X5 sees my Epson V700 scanner, and uses the Epson Scan software Version 3920_41. I successfully imported images into PSP X5 from my scanner since attempting to do the same with PSP X6 64 bit.
The Epson software indicates that it is x64 compatible listing "Epson Scan 3.9.2.0 Windows 7, Windows 7 64-bit Edition, Windows 8, Windows 8 64-bit Edition, Window Vista, Windows Vista 64-bit Edition, Windows XP, Windows XP 64-bit Edition." I realise this does not confirm it is a native 64 bit application.

I initially installed only the 64 bit version of PSP X6. I uninstalled that, and selected to install the 64 bit/32 bit version, but the error continues when starting PSP X6 from the icon installed on the desktop. This I now consider is why I have had this issue. Starting the 32 bit version of PSP X6 from Corel PaintShop Pro.exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X6 results in the scanner being found and used as it is in PSP X5.

I now have two PSP icons - one targeting the 64 bit installation folder, and the other, the 32 bit installation folder. :)

What follows is some detail of my effort to get my scanner connected and working in PSP X6

In PSP X6 64 bit, clicking on File/Import/Twain Acquire results in a message box "No scanner found". Clicking on the scanner icon in the toolbar results in the same error message.
In PSP X5,*or in PSP X6 32 bit, clicking on File/Import/Twain Acquire starts the Epson Scan software.

In PSP X6 64 bit, clicking on File/Import/Twain Source results in an empty "Select Source" box.
In PSP X5, or in PSP X6 32 bit, clicking on File/Import/Twain Source results in a populated "Select Source" box (with Epson Perfection V700/v750 3.92 selected.)

PSP X6 64 bit only sees my Epson V700 scanner from File/Import/From Scanner or Camera ...

While "File/Import/From Scanner or Camera" works, it doesn't use the Epson Scan Version 3920_41 software, and therefore doesn't provide the same level of control. Scans taken this way in PSP X6 64 bit (at the same dpi) are poorer quality than those taken using PSP X5, or PSP X6 32 bit, with the Epson Perfection V700/v750 3.92 Scan software.

An (apparently) unrelated comment is that when I (at one stage) selected to install the 32 bit version of PSP X6 the install window still selects "C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel paintShop Pro X6 (64-bit)" as the installation folder. And shows the installation space required as (from memory) 337MB.)

My current installation, is 172MB on disk in C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X6 (64-bit), and 162MB on disk in C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel paintShop Pro X6.

I have the same problem when using 64bit, it simply will not see my CanonScan 8800F Scanner. I have reinstalled the 64bit driver for Canon ( numerous times). Done all the other workarounds but it refuses to see the scanner.

I have uninstalled the 64 bit and installed the 32bit only and it finds the scanner as it did in X5.

This is a major bug and needs fixing fast.

Hi,

It is the same for Canon CanonScan LIDE 600F. TWAIN driver (Scangear GS) is OK with PSP X6 32 bit and not seen with PSP X6 64 bit.
The Scangear GS TWAIN driver itself is 64 bit.

File/Import/From Scanner or Camera works, but it is a WIA driver that does not have all the capabilities of TWAIN driver, far from it.

As teerya84 said : This is a major bug and needs fixing fast.

I apologize for my wrong English. I hope you understand me.

I'll post my temporary solution in this topic as well. :D

I have the same problem with my Canon 8600f.
I use a workaround by programming a button on the scanner to open the scanned file in X6 (64-bit), it opens the scanner software in one go.
If Paintshop Pro is already open it shows the scanner software right away.

Image

The 64 bit exe is not in 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X6' but in 'C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X6 (64-bit)'

My OP may have implied that my installation of PSP X6 64 bit/32 bit did not place a shortcut to the 32 bit version on the desktop. It did do so, but I didn't see it initially because it was hidden behind another window, and was not adjacent to the 64 bit shortcut.
I also hope that the 64 bit version will soon be updated to see Twain scanners. In the meantime my workaround is to use 32 bit for scanning, and 64 bit for processing.

Your workaround Pinobot looks a good one. I have an Epson scanner and don't have anything like the utility that you have for your Canon scanner.

Can anybody point me to an Epson utility that does the same thing?

And I really hope that Corel sort this problem out. I don't want the hassle of scanning in 32 bit and then processing in 64 bit. Kind of defeats the object of PSP X6's main selling point!

It's common problem with TWAIN application, users usually confused with it.
The simplest way to check whether your scanner supported 64-bit TWAIN application is --
If you have TWAIN application under C:\windows\twain_64, then your scanner manufacturer support 64-bit TWAIN, otherwise they just claim TWAIN can be used under 64-bit OS.
Just like you can use 32-bit PSP to use TWAIN application on 64-bit OS.

For example, you can find *.ds files under your C:\windows\twain_32 folder, then if you want your scanner can work with 64-bit application, you must find some .ds file under C:\windows\twain_64 folder after you install the driver from manufacturer.
Those .ds file are native dynamic linking files, can not be copied from twain_32 folder to twain_64.

As you metioned before, PSP offer a "File/Import/From Scanner or Camera" which using WIA technology as an alternative, and it's COM based technology, can cross 32-bit/64-bit boundary to work. But the functionality is limited and provided by microsoft, it's just an alternative.

As I know, very few scanner model support 64-bit TWAIN, and you should also can not use TWAIN even with 64-bit photoshop.

Thanks for this confirmation that the issue lies with the scanner software. I suspected this was the cause.
So we should be pushing the scanner manufacturers to provide native 64 bit Twain drivers, rather than blaming PaintShop Pro X6.

This is the reply I received from Epson. I asked if they planned to issue Twain 64 bit drivers - but they ignored that part of my query.
*********************************
Thank you for contacting Epson Support.

You have recently contacted the Call Centre regarding scanning using TWAIN in a 64-bit program.

This is not currently supported. The same can be seen with Photoshop CS6 64-bit. The TWAIN scanning is not supported in 64-bit, only in 32-bit versions of the software. We would suggest scanning first with Epson Scan or Silverfast and then using the file in your selected image editor.
********************************
VueScan (http://www.hamrick.com/) is available in both 32 and 64 bit versions.
Quote from Wikipedia - "The program uses its own independent method to interface with scanner hardware."

VueScan Professional has comprehensive control of both input and output. However I haven't seen a way to integrate it with PSPX6. :(

I emailed the author of Vuescan and he doesn't plan to issue a 64 bit twain driver either.

As df said, Vuescan is 32-bit only and it can be used with 32-bit PSP. You can use "import/TWAIN source..." to switch TWAIN source.
If you install 64-bit TWAIN sample application (it's a dummy 64-bit TWAIN application, you can find it in the following URL), you can see PSP did support 64-bit TWAIN.

For those choosing to use VueScan http://www.hamrick.com/ as a workaround to the 64-bit problem in PaintShop Pro X6 64-bit:

If you want your scanned images to open in PSPX6 x64, set configuration in the VueScan Prefs tab.

Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The example shows use of the External viewer to achieve this goal. This overrides the default external viewer for TIF or JPG files set in Windows.

Immediately below the External viewer option in VueScan is an External editor option. However, apparently this option does not work correctly on some scanners. With my Epson Perfection V500 PHOTO, using External viewer configured for Corel Paintshop Pro (64-bit) opens the scanned image in PSP ready for additional editing.

Re: Paintshop Pro X6 64 bit issue with Scanner

Post by kengee »

From Kengee,
I to have so far been unable to get PSP X6 64 bit to populate the Scanner Twain source window. Having read all the posts on the problem, particularly that by EvanCheng I discovered from visiting http://sourceforge.net/projects/twain-samples/files/ that a new Twain version 2.1 has been released that is truly 64bit. Unfortunately, as Source Forge state, very few scanner manufacturers yet incorporate this version. Instead still build their drivers around the older 1.9 version, which is a 32bit software that can be used in a 64bit environment; IF that environment will tolerate it.
I am using a Canon 8600F unit that works fine in PSP X6 32bit. I have installed the latest driver files from Canon that purport to be compatible with Windows 7 64 bit but install in the usual TWAIN32 folder. I previously did not have a TWAIN64 folder; nor for that matter a SYSTEM/WOW64 folder. However having now installed the latest TWAIN 2.1 version it automatically created said folders. But since as said previously, the scanner driver is not written around this version, the folder remains empty.
Therefore, as far as I can see our problems are twofold:
1. The scanner manufacturers need to release drivers that are truly 64bit architecture(which I doubt will happen for legacy products such as mine)
2. Corel have to produce an update for PSP X6 that will recognise the pseudo 32/64 bit drivers
that users are tied to.
I doubt that we can do much about the former; but we need to bring pressure to bear on Corel to make what is generally a good product great.
