Chatter at DPR on X6 Color management problems. . .
I assume the largest number of leading edge users will be here for X6. Are you guys encountering any Color issues with X6? As good as the color management is on X5, and how well it matches the color on ACDSee Pro 6 (Significantly BETTER than even ACDSee's OWN stand-alone editor), I'd hate to go backwards even a tiny bit. What's your take on this issue?
One last question, will installing the X6 trial, screw up in any way my copy of X5? I hate it when a free trial supplants the older licensed version in even tiny ways!

I can use both X5 and X6.
Please see my example in the X6 bugs thread re the colour conversion issue.

You can install the trial of X6 without interfering with X5. I have multiple versions installed and they are all independent of one another.GlenBarrington wrote: One last question, will installing the X6 trial, screw up in any way my copy of X5? Re: Chatter at DPR on X6 Color management problems. . .
Here's a link to the discussions at DPR about PSPx6's color management issues. (Hope I'm not overstepping by doing this.)
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3536360?page=3
Chromiumdomium and bananahead brought up the color management issue in the PSPx6 bugs thread. I'm linking to those comments here for convenience.
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=51387
Unfortunately, I've only linked to the pages where the discussions are displayed. I didn't know how to link to the specific posts.
Looks serious enough that it ought to be brought to Corel's attention.

Re: Chatter at DPR on X6 Color management problems. . .
I'm the guy that started the chatter on DPR. This definitely should be brought to Corel's attention. I have PSP set to Prophoto as a working space. I would never use sRGB as Corel recommends.I'm getting weird and very oversaturated colors on most of my tifs that have either Prophoto or Adobe embedded profiles. It seems that the crux of the problem is that PSP cannot read the profile tags in the files. Most files report either no profile (---) or "unknown" in the metadata panel under Manage. One file that is actually Prophoto is for some reason reporting as sRGB in PSP. This file seems to display correctly. But, Bridge shows it to in fact be a Prophoto tagged file. All the unknowns and ---'s are showing their correct profiles in Bridge as well. I have been very careful not to save anything from PSP because I don't want these files' profiles corrupted or converted to a smaller space.
This is a deal breaker for me. I'm disappointed, because I really want someone to provide Adobe refugees a good professional alternative.

I now have an open case with Corel about this. So let's see what they come up with. It is a deal breaker for me.

Re: Chatter at DPR on X6 Color management problems. . .
Hi,
I'm one of the other posters over on DPReview (ChromiumDomium - Really called Greg) In an attempt to make it really easy to see what's going on I'll post a series of images here:
First PSPX4 With three tiffs one aRGB one sRGB and one Prophoto. In the "Manage" Tab
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chromiumdomium/9603615450/
Second: PSPX6
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chromiumdomium/9600421483/
Now some PSPX4 Colour Manage Setting Screens:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chromiumdomium/9600581431/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chromiumdomium/9600590115/
Now the same PSPX6 screens
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chromiumdomium/9600590119/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chromiumdomium/9600658871/
Now PSPX4 and then X6 Conversion Message Screens
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chromiumdomium/9600590989/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chromiumdomium/9600671617/
And the Final Results of the Prophoto to sRGB conversion First PSPX4 and then PSPX6
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chromiumdomium/9603824994/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chromiumdomium/9603892354/
If you went through each of these you'll see that not only is the Manage Tab showing the files without any sort of profile aware processing going on but also the conversion appears to do nothing!
I have tried saving the files off and this still doesn't work. To make things worse the sRGB files don't look quite right to me either. Personally I could handle the lack of Prohoto or aRGB for my PP work in PSPX6 but as it stands I have little confidence in the sRGB output either.
Hope this helps to clarify the problem I and I think others are observing,
Greg
(Note: Sorry I tried embedding the photos but I seem to have forgotten how to do this from flickr)

Re: Chatter at DPR on X6 Color management problems. . .
Can everyone who has this problem please report it to Corel.
My case has now been passed to level 2 technical support and I think that if more people raise the issue that it will get looked at and fixed quicker.

Re: Chatter at DPR on X6 Color management problems. . .
I tried, but it seems that I cannot get support without buying it. The support page tells me that I'm entitled to a free single support case, but without a registration code I cannot start the case. I thought I'd registered it already as part of the install process and then clicking the appropriate link in the e-mail they sent me post install. In my account product list I can see all the Corel products I own, but nothing related to the PSPX6 trial and definitely nothing to do with a support code.bananahead wrote:Can everyone who has this problem please report it to Corel.

It's frightening that you have to go so many hoops just to try and inform support of a significant product issue. I didn't sign up to be a beta tester, but would be glad to help get a resolution to this problem in whatever way possible. I really want this new version to work for me, but cannot afford to buy it on the off-chance that this bug/design feature

Yes I jumped through a hoop or two as well.
try here (it's what I did)

Or you can try emailing mycasesupport@corel.com and explaining that you are an existing customer wanting to upgrade and have issues.

I've sent an e-mail to the support inbox. I gave up trying to negotiate the case support system. Hope I remained civil after a frustrating 30mins of round robinbananahead wrote:Yes I jumped through a hoop or two as well.

And unfortunately I still need a case number so my e-mail is thrown out as invalid. CS6 then!chromiumdomium wrote:I've sent an e-mail to the support inbox. Re: Chatter at DPR on X6 Color management problems. . .
I haven't heard, has this issue been resolved?
Edit: I just downloaded the free trial before the 'Black Friday' special upgrade price in the USA expires next week (pretty good price, don't know if it is a global price, or just USA), and I am able to match the colors between. ACDSee Pro 7, PSPX5, and PSPX6 (64 bit). The default settings DO make things appear pretty far apart though. The difference in color with the defaults is pretty striking. More striking than what I've seen with other software.
I have a calibrated screen, and I had to make sure that all three used the same icc profile (I have some older unfortunately named previous profiles I need to do something about.), and when I did, all 3 programs fell into line color wise.
Now I need to decide if I want to upgrade or wait.
