Slow start and crashes with 64-bit version

I installed only the 64-bit version on my Windows 7 system. After my initial opening of the program, I changed the startup preference to "Editor." Things went well until I opened the Manage tab, navigating to a folder with 100+ images.

Since then, it takes at least 45 seconds to open and then PSPX6 usually crashes after moving around in the folder and/or opening one of the images in Editor.

This reminds me of the problems with some recent versions that were related to browser issues.

PSPX5 is running well. Getting ready to report my problem to support and to do an uninstall and reinstall of both 32x and 64x for additional testing.

Tested on 64bit version: When PSP X6 works in the 'Adjust' workspace the undo operation does not restores the various slider positions (for example the Correction blend slider control under the Digital Noise Removal)

with 32bit-version I can access my scanner (canoscan 5600f/twain).
The 64bit-version tells me, that no scanner could be found

I experience the exact same problem, and I am using a Canon network Pixma MP620 multi unit (i.e. network printer/copier/scanner).
PSP X6 32 bits recognises it, but not 64 bit.
I am using Windows 8 64 bit, and have installed the appropriate drivers for it.

With the use of Windows Task Manager and additional testing, I was able to solve the startup problem I reported here.

Installation of PaintShop Pro X6 includes a beg notice that appears soon after closing PSP. That remained in memory and created a problem with the next startup of PSP. Selecting the Don't Show Again option eliminated that process and PSP then started "normally."

However, despite other improvements, startup of PaintShop Pro remains a clunky, three-stage procedure: 1. Appearance of the copyright box, 2. Then appearance of the Interface, and 3. And, finally, the progam becomes available for use (with the eventual disappearance of the animated Windows circle icon).

Here's my comparison of the three time-categories above for three versions of PSP (timer started with mouse click-to-start):

PSPX5 -- 3 seconds, 7 seconds, 21 seconds
PSPX6(32-bit) -- 2 seconds, 6 seconds, 28 seconds
PSPX6 (64-bit) -- 2 seconds, 5 seconds, 26 seconds

And here are the times from a few competitor programs in the same price range as PSP (only time shown is from click-to-start to open-and-ready-to-use):

PhotoPlus X6 -- 8 seconds
Photoshop Elements 11 -- 7 seconds
PhotoLine 17 -- 3 seconds
Zoner Photo Studio 15 -- 2 seconds
Paint.NET (a free program) -- 2 seconds

Thus, sluggish startup, although not a bug, needs additional work to better match the competition.

I can't get the tool palette to dock and scrolling an image rolls the image up under the tool palette, so you have to move the palette to move the image. it's set to allow docking of all the palettes.

I just un-docked mine so I could take a screen shot of the docking arrows to show you. Are you not seeing them? If not, you may want to reset the workspace. Save your workspace if you haven't already and then close PSP and re-open it while holding down the shift key. Agree to the prompt to reset. This seems to cure a lot of ails.

I do see those Kathy but don't know how to use them. Tried clicking on one, they disappear as soon as I turn loose of the mouse button.

Drag the tool options bar itself on top of one of the arrows. You'll see a blue highlighted area demonstrating where the tool options bar will go. Then drop the tool options bar and it will dock into place.

This docking procedure works like a charm. Change for the sake of change I guess.

After much tinkering, I tried starting PSP with the Shift key and clicking on the start shortcut icon. That eliminated my customized workspace (then rebuilt from scratch rather than saving in advance of this restart method).

This seemed to solve all of my crashes and slow startups, although PSP is still not as fast starting as PhotoLine. I have since run the program numerous times, including exposing the Manage tab to a folder with several thousand images. Both x32 and x64 are very speedy here. No crashes since.

I have encountered at least one tool -- Drop Shadow -- that has not been updated for 16-bit images. But Blemish FIxer and Scratch Remover are doing a marvelous job for me on a project restoring digitized color slides. Alt+MouseDrag is much more intuitive than having to use those awful bracket keys to change brush size.

If my tests using PSPX6 as an external editor for Lightroom are satisfactory, PSP will return to my software lineup as my primary photo editor.

Just to confirm, Corel have advised us that workspaces from previous versions of PSP are not compatible and should not be used with the released PSP.

following on from my previous question regarding any fixes for the X6 bugs, has anyone heard of these fixes being addressed?

For me I'm uninstalling X6 and returning to X5 as the features I use often at least work, ie jpeg and png optimizer and the scanner. I'm not fussed about 64bit at all, just want the thing to work.

So for me it's the end of the line with this product, I'll stick with X5 and not getting any more upgrades as there are just more and more bugs with each new version when they should be improvements. I simply don't have the time to stuff about with all these "workarounds" to get the thing doing what it's supposed to do in the first place, very poor form from Corel.

I might revisit X6 if and when the major fixes are done but there doesn't seem to be any great rush on the part of Corel.

Enjoy
