Recently when I have more than one file open, and I save a file, it is common for PSP to hang: I see the file save status (always SLOW) and the save seems about complete.

But then PSP hangs with a partially garbaged unrefreshed screen.

Usually if I click somewhere outside the PSP window, then back again on the PSP window, it refreshes and all is well.

This happens fairly often, not sure if it started before or after SP2.

Also PSP startup was slow, but is now slower. If I open PSP by double-clicking a PSP file, it takes much longer: after the initial 7-8 seconds the window is open & the image displayed, but then I still have an hourglass cursor for another 10+ seconds.

note: I emptied the PSP cache. My Windows 7 is up to date, complete reinstall in January.

PSP is *** up.
And it's getting worse with every version.
The only thing that works right are the *** adds.

there are so many bugs in PSP X6 SP2 it's getting harder and harder to use. half of my workflow is now mitigating bugs.

annoyances:
1) Chromasub sampling - why does nobody at corel understand this? do they not use the product. which one of the following do we think was saved with no subsampling and which one was on maximum?
combined.png
that's right the bottom image has no chromasubsampling, top is maximum.

i don't know if the scale is upside down or what but it's been like this for a long time.

2) crop tool randomly crashes. seems to be mostly when i have a mixture of vectors and raster layers. i have to save all the time.

3) the display doesn't refresh properly. i keep thinking i haven't selected something or rather can't then i remember, scroll the wheel to zoom a little and the display updates and then i can see what's going on.

4) for some reason the edit selection tool that shows your selections in red is now so slow it's unusable.

i don't know what they fixed in sp2. but nothing that i noticed.

what bugs should I be wary of and how do I prevent them?

I don't recall very many issues when PSP was by jasc.

Depending on your system and how you use the program, you may not be bothered by any. Every system is different and when someone reports a bug it doesn't always mean it will impact everyone.

My suggestion would be to download the free trial and see for yourself that way there are no surprises.

When PSP X6 is started, the (floating) Organizer is blank even though a picture from the selected folder shows up in the Preview window. I dock it and the photos appear, then when I float it they stay.

I don't have this problem with PSP X5.

The SP2 update makes PSP X6 unusable for me. With Windows 8.1 and the recent update applied to Windows 8.1 from Microsoft, PSP X6 becomes unusable if I apply PSPX6_SP2. With just PSPX6_SP1 applied, it works properly.

What happens is that PSP X6 works OK once after applying PSPX6_SP2. I have successfully adjusted several photos after applying PSPX6_SP2 and then launching PSP. If I then exit PSP properly, and then launch it again, I cannot use the Navigation pane to open files. From the moment I relaunch PSP, I get a little spinning busy circle that never stops, and does not allow me to open folders below the root.

I have tried uninstalling PSP and using the cleaning tool several times to no avail. As soon as I apply PSPX6_SP2, I get the spinning little busy circle on the second launch.

Bye.

Have you tried deleting the database? If the database gets corrupted or points to files that are no longer there or changed name, it has been known to freak out. It's a long shot, but something about SP2 could have made the database unstable. Usually deleting the database and starting over fixes the problem.

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Corel PaintShop Pro\16.0\Database\ImageDB.db

Replace UserName with your username. That is the file you want to try deleting.

Probably won't matter if it's an incompatibility with Windows 8.1 but worth a try and less annoying than uninstalling PSP completely.

Just a note to say SP2 seems to be totally compatible with Win 8.1 x64... at least on my set-up.

Thanks for the long shot - it was worth a try - no joy - same little spinning circle on second launch.

I have several other Windows 8.1 Pro machines here I could try PSP X6 on to see if it's just this one particular machine.

Thanks again,

Bye.

Hi Linda Sue,
That gap in the workspace at the edges has been mentioned before.
I suspect it has something to do with the wide screens becoming more common nowdays and the program unable to naturally default to the wide screen. .
Top right hit the restore down button and drag in the edges of the program window and at some point the gaps will disappear.
I als found that with a full screen etup, just load an image then Window > Tick Tabbed documents and then untick it again and again the gaps disappear.
So yes it is a minor glitch in X6 and these are a couple of workarounds.

I've found a work-around and now see more specifically what the problem is . . . . .

The spinning busy circle only shows up when I exit PSP X6 SP2 with the Navigation Pane pointing into my H: drive photo folders. My H: drive is a 4TB RAID (half full) where I keep most of my photos and videos. If just before exiting PSP X6 SP2 I navigate to the default Pictures library folder on the C: drive, then when I reopen PSP X6 SP2 the next time, it will behave itself.

So it has to do with launching PSP X6 SP2 when the Navigation Pane is going to go back to the last folder looked at, and in my case, that folder is on my H: drive, a 4TB RAID. That is why most people will never see this problem.

I have similar problems using PSP X6 with Win 8.1
My way of overcoming the hourglass delay is
either
1) point to a Collection in Manage Mode rather than This PC Computer folders
or
2) clear the Cache under Reset Preferences

I have problem with the Load Palette:

Load up a 256 colour gif image, save the palette. Load up another gif image and select the Load Palette with nearest colour matching and I get a "Command could not be completed because the document type is unsupported" crash when I select the Load button. The Script output windows says: "------- Command Execution Failed ----------- Command Name: ColorInc256 Error Text: Command could not complete because the document type is unsupported."

I am using PSP X6 16.2.0.20 x64

Please see this message earlier in the thread:

There was a whole discussion about this, the bug seems to be older than X6.
