@anthea

I know this doesn't help. But you could also replace the Open command with a script to always open a duplicate of the image. I think that script comes pre-packaged with PSP - OpenDuplicate. This would force PSP to use SaveAs if you closed the program. Nothing will help if you use Adjust and then move over to Edit. Adjust while being simplistic and easy for someone to get into has some of the greatest restrictions.

As for telling what method to save the file as, there is no way other than the extension since once it's expanded inside PSP it no longer has a format beyond PSP format.

No. Do you use it if you change the infamous edit modes, and the program forces you to save the picture? No. Do you use it if you close PSP and forgot to save multiple pictures, and the program reminds you about it (especially when it is late at night and you're already half asleep)? No.
If you ever answer one of those questions automatically with "yes", you get your picture destroyed, and probably you only find that out much later.
Anthea:

Your response explains why the functioning of Save is so important for you - now I understand. It illustrates clearly for me how each of us approaches the workflow differently and tailors it to our likes, dislikes and biases. We need to keep that in mind in a forum like this. And the only right way to use PSP is the way each of us uses it.

My earlier post was based on the fact that I very rarely use Save, most often after I have created a .pspimage file. When working on a jpg I use SaveAs almost exclusively and Save only for one time "throw away" images - maybe I'm paranoid about losing a good image. Plus, I shoot raw and use a non-destructive editing to create a jpg so I always have an original file tucked away.

I don't understand "Do you use it if you change the infamous edit modes, and the program forces you to save the picture?" As far as I know I do not encounter this - I know this happens with Adjust mode but I never go near that function.

My keyboard shortcuts don't work anymore.
Is there somewhere you can switch those on and off?

If you go to View -> Customize and click on the Keyboard tab you can set them up or reset them.

Bug with the image display:
1) Create Empty project 2000x2000 > Create new raster layer;
2) Draw something on the new layer;
3) Select a *part* of the drawing with the freehand select tool; don't deselect it;
4) Select the Move tool;
5) Click on an unselected part of the drawing (so that the *whole* layer will move, no just the selected part) and drag *rapidly* in random directions;
6) While doing that, chances are that artifacts/pieces of the drawing will trial behind the mouse. Sometimes, one the movement is ended, they won't dissapear (so, a bug).
(They will dissapear once the program is minimized/Alt-Tabbed, then accessed again.)

This is related to all of the redraw bugs people have been reporting with PSPX6.

My customized keyboard shortcuts undo themselves occasionally.

Not sure why, but it is a pita.

I attribute it to PSP Poltergeists.

Bought a Canon 1100D today.

Camera Raw LAb preview in PSPX6 looks like this:

But when i edit it PSPX6 it looks like this:

Canon's own Digital Photo Professional software had the same problem but after updating that software to the latest version everything looks fine.

Please update Camera Raw LAb.

Hi,

I have the exact same problem: PSPx6 crashes whenever I try to start it. A month ago (when I last used it), it was working flawlessly.
The error message is:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: Corel PaintShop Pro.exe
Application Version: 16.0.0.2
Application Timestamp: 525f5ccf

Please advise - support will not help, unless I pay more than I paid for PSPx6. :(

I tried PSPX6-64 using WIA: File | Import |From Scanner or Camera, with my Epson GT-15000 scanner. Scan window pops up, preview works, I set the resolution & the scan runs, but nothing in PSP: no window or tab, and PSP X6 is not responding. Via Task Manager I try "switch to task" & get an error popup & PSP is still unresponsive, so I close it w/Task Mgr.

Now PSPX6 will not start, but crashed right away w/the "has stopped working" message immediately.

Noticing the reference to Wintab32.dll in this error? WIA worked fine in PSP X5 with the newly scanned file open in PSP.

Ugly, & I am frustrated! Eventually I think to restart two services (WIA & Wintab), and can run PSP X6 again. Next time the WIA File import works fine... must have been standing on the wrong foot before.

I can in 64bit X6.

I've not used the TWAIN acquire since PSP3. X5 couldn't TWAIN and now neither can X6. I've trained myself to use the : File | Import |From Scanner or Camera - option.

This is working fine with my EPSON 580.

Grazie
BUT WIA limitations & interface are unacceptable! My new workaround: a desktop shortcut to PSPX6 32bit with a script on the command line that runs Import--> TWAIN Acquire. It starts my EPSON scanner s/w for me (if I remember to turn the scanner ON :-). Every little bit helps !!!!

Hi all.

Since version X6, I noticed that whenever I edit a photo, by default it will save the edited pic using the default 20 compression level.

But I want to keep it as 5 compression level. But now I have to use the Save As everytime I want to save the edited photo.

How can I solve this kind of problem?

Thank you.

This issue was discussed at some length in this thread - see Page 12 of PSP X6 Bugs and Fixes. Also, look at http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=52829. Bottom line, yes, use Save As to get the compression level you want. I find that once I have set the compression level with Save As it is retained, although I think it may get reset to 20 for some reason so worth checking.

Thanks for your response.

Regarding the bold part, yeah it worked that way in the previous version, but not in X6.

So the question is, why don't X6 let user set the default custom compression level on its own? Isn't that better.

Really hope that Corel can give some service update about this. Coz I believe some amount of details would be loss by the default compression.

And I don't want to keep backup.

Thank you.

Ridiculously lame!!. We can only hope someone decides to fix this stupidity, and the subchroma settings bug ASAP.

anthea wrote:So I tried now to contact the customer support for this problem. The official answer is:
If you prefer saving a high quality photo, you have to do it via SAVE AS. Save has a default compression setting which cannot be altered.
Yeah, I second that!

It's very weird that Corel forced us to use the default compression level 20 for Save edited picture.

Ermmm....
