Lip Sync

Hello. I filmed our nephew's wedding a couple of weeks ago and have a problem with lip synchronisation for the wedding speeches when burning to HD Blu-ray. I filmed with the camera in HD mode and then used Coral VS Pro X3 to edit and produce a rendered mpg file. Then used Movie Factory 7 SE to produce a number of DVD's with no problem. I also had requests to produce a few HD Blu-ray copies, so in VS I created a separate rendered mpg file using options: Blu-ray/H.264 1920 x 1080. When I've selected the MPEG2 1920 x 1080 option here in the past, I've ended up with a file which won't run in Movie Factory (don't know why), but H.264 seems to be ok. Then used this H.264 file in Movie Factory to create a Blu-ray disc, under "Options" on the final screen I made sure that all properties matched the original file (ie Upper Field First, Dolby Audio etc) and burnt to a Panasonic Blu-ray disc - boy aren't these expensive compared to blank DVD discs! The quality on HD TV is fantastic, but there's a clear problem with lip sync which is only apparent during the speeches section of the wedding - if sound and visual are slightly out elsewhere it's not noticeable, but obviously during a close-up of someone talking then even a very slight problem with synchronisation shows up and of course is very annoying when viewed. I'd stress that this problem isn't there with a DVD, only arises with Blu-ray. I can supply all the settings I've used in VS and Movie Factory if that would be helpful, but in the meantime, does anyone have any advice? Many thanks, Clive

A couple of questions. Did you view the H.264 file to see if there was any out of sync issues with it before authoring to disc? What HD TV and Blu Ray player are you using? Same brands, different? What brand of Blu Ray media?

A. A hiccup or background activity with your PC could have happened when rendering the H.264 file.
B. Different TV and player can be a problem usually because 120Hz and 240Hz is active and calculating frame interpolation to keep up. Check TV menu and disable this feature. Use 60Hz.
C. Blu Ray player may have problems reading that particular brand of media.

Just be aware that you can also burn a Blu-Ray folder on the last page of MF7 instead of a disc. That way you can play the folder in a software Blu-Ray player to see if there are any problems before burning to an actual disc. But you will need a third party program to burn a disc, such as Nero or the freeware ImgBurn.

My thanks to Robert and Ken for replies to my query and apologies for dilatory response. TV and Blu-Ray player are different brands (B&O TV and Panasonic Blu-ray), but my feeling was that this wasn't where the problem lay. I encountered the same problem around eighteen months ago, but for the life of me couldn't remember what I did to resolve it - it was one of those where I tried loads of different things, but didn't keep proper notes, therefore wasn't quite sure which set of options eventually worked! Hence my submission to the forum this time around. Anyway, I think I've figured it out. What seems to work is that in VS, at the time you create the rendered file, choose "Blu-ray/H.264 1920 x 1080", then under "Options", uncheck the "Perform Smart Render" button. Then in MF7SE make sure all properties are the same and hey ho, it works fine! Whereas if "Perform Smart Render" is left on (default setting), then with an HD disc there are lip sync problems, which don't arise with DVD's. No idea what's going on, but it seems to work. Also, regarding the production of further/future copies of discs, for DVD's I tend to use the "burn disc image" .ISO option and then use Roxio to quickly produce further DVD's. Of course with Blu-ray, the .ISO option isn't available, so I guess you use the "Folder" option instead? How exactly does this work please? I've fired up Roxio and can't see how to use a folder to burn off a second disc. I don't currently have Nero - what's freeware ImgBurn like? Thanks again, Clive
