Recording narration without a video
Is there a way to record a narration without recording video?
Or do I have to cheat the system and record both audio/video to then remove the video track?

Re: Recording narration without a video
There is no need to record a video while recording sound just use the "Voice over" option from the Record/Capture Icon box.
You would not normally capture narration and video at the same time anyrate - you would normally do your editing - then add the narration - but it is not necessary to have a video in the video tracks to record sounds.

Hum. that is what i thought, but when I tried that, as soon as I clicked on another application (Word, for the text I need to read), the Voice-over recording stopped. So I thought I needed a video with it.
Any idea why it does not record when the VS window is not active?

Hi
What version of Video Studio are you using, some are having issues with Voice Over using X6, (device error, cannot open wave-in device) X5 seems to work ok.
Just tried using X6 and getting that error.
You can minimise VS work station to a smaller view, that way the word doc would be visible whilst Video Studio is active.
As a workround Video Studio Screen Capture audio should remain active whilst recording audio, you would get video, but can split audio on the timeline.
Otherwise use windows 7 Sound Recorder, you can if you wish play the video in VS whilst doing the voice over.
Then import the new audio to the timeline.

Re: Recording narration without a video
Yes, I am using VS X6. I am not getting any error per say though.
Minimizing the window would not work since I would not be able to scroll to read the text.
Recording a "fake" video with it was a workaround I thought of.
Thanks for your answer. At least I know it is not something I am doing wrong, and there is a workaround.

Wouldn't an easier "workaround" be to print out your narration from Word - then read from the paper as you record in VideoStudio.

Probably, but that means I would have to walk downstairs to retrieve the document!Wouldn't an easier "workaround" be to print out your narration from Word - then read from the paper as you record in VideoStudio.

Re: Recording narration without a video
Hi Brian
Can you do a quick test.
Add one of your Panasonic video clips to the top timeline, then try a voice over.
I get an error, wont take this any further on this post as I feel I may be hijacking Cassel’s issue.
Cassell use Screen Capture, the video clip will be inserted to the library
Insert clip to the timeline and Share create Sound file.
The video file can then be deleted.
Best I can do at the moment, unfortunately Video Studio likes working alone.

Re: Recording narration without a video
The other simple option would be to forget about using VS for the voiceovers. I never use it, but prefer to use a third party audio editor like the freeware Audacity, which gives me more options, filters etc. I have half the monitor screen with Audacity in it, and the other half with my Word script. I do each voiceover as a separate .wav file and simply insert it in the voice track at the appropriate point.

Re: Recording narration without a video
Whether i record narration reading from a printed sheet or with a screen capture to remove the video later on, can I save the segments and have them in my media folder? I would like to record small segments, save them all in my folder so I can "pick and choose" if one is better and go from there. Is that possible or do I have to let them all "live" on the timeline while I record them all?

Re: Recording narration without a video
Yes in VideoStudio every time you start and stop the recording it puts a block in the timeline AND puts a .wav file in the working folder so you can do it numerous times and just use the one which you consider best.

Re: Recording narration without a video
That what I would have expected but I don't see the clip added to the working folder at all, which seemed odd too.
Is it supposed to appear on that top right section with all the other working "clips" I have imported/saved in that folder or does it display somewhere else I am not looking?
