Newbie question about cutting a clip
Newbie question here. I am familiar with Camtasia, but working my way in VSX6 now. In Camtasia, I could select a segment and simply cut it (with the scissors icon). In VS, it looks like I have to cut both ends of the segment and then delete it. Is that the correct and only way to do it, or is there a more direct way to cut a segment out?

Re: Newbie question about cutting a clip
So how did you create the "segment" in Camtasia.?
In VS (and in all video editors I would think), you create a "split" at the beginning and at the end of the section you want to remove. You then select the "segment" between the split points and delete.

In Camtasia, you place markers at the start and the end of the "segment", and just click the icon once and it is cut.
In VS, it seems to be extra steps to cut at the beginning, cut at the end and then delete the middle.

Re: Newbie question about cutting a clip
Maths has never been my strong point, but I count exactly the same number of steps for each program. With Camtasia, you insert a marker at the start of where you want to cut (Step 1), then insert another marker at the end of what you want to cut (Step 2), then you click on the Scissors icon and the clip disappears (Step 3).
With Video Studio, you cut at the beginning of what you want to delete (Step 1), then you cut at the end of what you want to delete (Step 2), then you delete the cut bit (Step 3) -- though I suppose you could count highlighting the clip before you delete it an extra step. But four steps instead of three is hardly onerous!!

Re: Newbie question about cutting a clip
I am not familiar with Camtasia but from Cassels description you don't have to do an actual cut but just place a marker at the location. So it would seem that there are 2 extra steps involved with VS - clicking the scissor icon to create the cut.
Or have I been wasting 2 extra clicks all this time?

Re: Newbie question about cutting a clip
It is not such a big deal, yes it can mean an extra "click", but I just wanted to make sure that was the correct steps.
I am just a tiny bit confused with the markers on the slider right under the preview, and the orange line appearing on top of the timeline. In Camtasia, everything was done on top of the timeline, so it is a matter of getting adjusted. In Camtasia, the segment can be played (to check and see if it is the correct segment to cut) then ONE click on the scissors will cut both ends AND delete it.
Then, in VS, if I can CUT without the trim marker (to save a click), what are the trim markers for?
(newbie questions, I know)

Re: Newbie question about cutting a clip
If you feel more comfortable using the trim markers under the preview screen then it is quite acceptable to do it that way - set the trim markers either by manually moving them - or hitting F3 and F4 while playing the video - then play the selected section before you hit the 'Enter' key and the trim is done - sounds from your description exactly like Camtasia.
I am a great believer in the addage that the "Correct" way to edit a clip is the way that works for you and that you are comfortable with - if you are happy using the trim markers then that is the correct way for you.
