auto add random transition in X5
I have decided some way through a long slide show to change via pref. to have the transitions auto added. But it has not worked, am I going about things the wrong way here?

I don't think you can add the random transitions after you have already created the slideshow, at least I have not found a way. Setting it in Preferences seems to apply only to any new images you add.

Re: auto add random transition in X5
Transitions are only added when inserting clips to the timeline.
As canuck says clips already on the timeline are not affected by auto insert transitions these have to be done manually.
You could however drag several to the library creating a copy, delete them from the timeline.
Then drag the clips from the library to timeline, transitions will be inserted.
Suggest you make a copy of the project before moving/deleting clips

Re: auto add random transition in X5
Perhaps I should have given more detail.Up until a certain point I was adding cross fade transitions manually. It is then after adding more images (jpeg pics) that I did not want anymore cross fades but wanted random transitions and thought it would be much quicker if they could be added automatically.

Re: auto add random transition in X5
my method
1 Select all images with no transitions
2 Drag to library
3 Delete those from timeline
4 Drag clips back to timeline
5 Random transitions are inserted
