Changing the Thumbnail for chapters

Post by pedro26 »

Hi I'm at the stage in Trevor's guide entitled 'My guide from Mpeg Capture to Burn'

Burn a DVD
stage 11/ add menus and chapters as required.

I have navigated to the exact points and done add chapter for each point, but the Thumbnails are not the best possible for the indicating the section's contents.

I tried the advice given in Large tutorial compiled by sjj1805, but lifted from a post by nomad which says double click on the thumbnail. I do that, navigate in the preview window to a more representative scene. Then it appears all I can do is 'add chapter', then it appears on the timeline as an extra chapter. My question is has it really increased the chapters, or is it just that UVS only has this way to show the new Thumbnail ?

Is there a better way of doing this ?

Thanks

Hi pedro26

Yes you can change the thumbnails to display a different frame.
This can be done for the Title menu, I think from the first page.

For Chapters, there was a problem in retaining the frame, although you could set this it reverted back to original frame when closing. I do not know if corel have fixed this issue, I will run some tests given time?

You can access the burner module a few different ways,
1 / from an empty timeline
2 / with the project open in the timeline.

To address some of the problems you must use option “1”
And if you are following my guide then you will be doing that.

Changing the Chapter Menu thumbnails, simply click on the thumbnail will open a new window named Start Position.

Trevor -- I was going to intervene yesterday with precisely this same suggestion as yours. But when I tried it, it did not work. So I waited to see if someone else came up with another suggestion. Certainly, that procedure always worked in the past for me, but now, whether right clicking or left clicking, single clicking or double clicking, I get nothing. Before, when right (I think) clicking on the chapter thumbnail after I had dragged the jog bar to a new image, I would get a dialogue box asking something like "Change thumbail image?" Now all I get is a balloon saying "Video Chapter Timecode xx:yy:zz". And if I click on the preview screen with the new image on it, I get nothing at all.

Is my memory fooling me or has some recent update (VS or Windows?) changed things???

Or are we now to establish a new chapter point at the better image, then go back and remove the original chapter point?

Hi Ken

Main menu/Titles

These thumbnails are set from the first page selecting the clip on the timeline, you have to move the curser from first frame for the "Change Thumbnail “ to be available.

Chapter Thumbnails.

After setting the chapter points you can change the thumbnail.
You do this from the Chapter Menu page, “View Currently Displayed Menu”, below preview screen.
Double clicking the thumbnail here will open a new window (Start Position)

In fact I have just accessed this window from the Title Menu, I thought it was just associated with the Chapters.

Chapter Menu Thumbnail changes had a problem, the change reverted back to the default thumbnail after closing.
But that depended on how you assessed the burner module, with or without the project (empty timelines etc were ok)
The first chapter point always reverts back, so you cannot change that one.??????
Whether Corel have fixed this issue I will have to run a few tests.

Sorry Trevor, but I just can't get that to work for the Chapters menu. It works fine -- as it always has -- for the top menu. But I don't even see any “View Currently Displayed Menu” in any of the screens. The nearest is "Currently displayed menu" on the Menu & Preview tab -- but that only changes the name of the chapters, not the image that appears on the chapter menu preview screen.

In the attached image, the thumbnails are all of chapters in a single video clip in the burning timeline. As I say, I can change the image of that single clip in the Main Menu. However, when I go into Add/Edit Chapters, and want to change thumbnail 1, 4, 5 and 6 to another image (rather than the black for chapter 1, and the titles of the rest), I select that chapter (double left clicking the relevant thumbnail so that the jog bar under the preview screen goes to the relevant chapter marker), then drag the jog bar to a suitable starting point. However, after that, I can find no way of fixing that image as the starting point showing in the thumbnail other than creating a new chapter point -- and as already said, I have double left and right clicked, single left and right clicked and done so both on the thumbnail itself (as in the main menu) and on the preview screen.
VS Chapters.jpg
I am obviously doing something wrong, or else we are talking chalk and cheese...

Hi Ken,

I change the thumbnails for chapters when I am editing my menu templates. I set the chapters points as you have done, click OK, then click Next to choose my menu templates for hte various menus I have decided upon. At that stage you can double click the chapter thumbnails and adjust the scene you want to see.

Trevor - there is a bug where it appears that the first thumbnail reverts to the default, but I can confirm the final product uses your chosen scene.

It would be great if the "change thumbnail" activities all took place in the first part of the burning module, but it' been this way for a long time, I guess!

Regards,
Kevin

Thanks -- that works fine for Thumbnail menus, though I don't recall ever having to go into the Menu selection part to change thumbnails.

However, if you use SmartScene menus, it does not seem so clear cut. The SmartScene menus just show, when looking at the Chapters part, a single screen and the various chapters listed as text. But clicking on anything in that Edit mode only allows you to change text, buttons etc, not any of the scenes.

In fact, when I first selected a Thumbnail menu and changed the relevant starting point image for each chapter, and then changed over to a SmartScene menu, then previewed it, each chapter I selected on the menu showed my new starting image in the menu screen. But this seems an unnecessarily complicated way of going about things, and again doesn't allow you to again change that starting image without going back over the whole process once again, first changing the image in a Thumbnail menu and so on.

Or am I again missing something???

Hi Ken

Sorry for delay in replying to this post, a little busy yesterday.

I have been referring to Thumbnail menus not Smart Scene Menus, so as not to confuse the issue I will continue using Thumbnails. Besides the Smart Scene use text for the chapter links.

Below is the windows I see after selecting the Chapter Menu, double click a thumbnail will open the Start Position window.

Thanks Trevor --- but I have already said I know that works fine with thumbnail menus. The problem is that I -- and probably some (many?) others use SmartScene menus for just about everything these days. And as I have also said, changing the chapter start scene is by no means as clear or easy...
